What is a temporary project engineer?

Temporary Project Engineers are professionals hired on a short-term or contract basis to support engineering projects within an organization. They typically assist with planning, coordinating, and executing specific phases of a project, such as design, testing, or implementation. Their role is crucial in managing project deadlines, ensuring technical standards are met, and providing specialized expertise during peak workloads or special assignments. Once the project or contract period ends, their employment usually concludes unless extended or renewed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary project engineer?

To thrive as a Temporary Project Engineer, you typically need a degree in engineering, strong analytical skills, and experience in project management. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and relevant industry certifications (like PMP or PE) is often required. Effective communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills help you manage shifting priorities and collaborate with diverse teams. These abilities are crucial for delivering projects on time and within budget, even within the limited timeframe of a temporary assignment.

What are some typical challenges faced by temporary project engineers, and how can they be successfully managed?

Temporary Project Engineers often face the challenge of quickly adapting to new teams, project scopes, and company processes within a limited timeframe. Success in this role depends on strong communication skills, the ability to rapidly learn and apply new systems, and effective time management. Building rapport with colleagues early and proactively seeking clarity on expectations can help temporary engineers integrate smoothly and deliver results within the project’s deadlines.

What is the difference between Temporary Project Engineer vs Project Engineer?

AspectTemporary Project EngineerProject Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering; certifications like PE are a plus but not mandatorySame as temporary; often requires a bachelor's degree, PE certification preferred for advanced roles
Work EnvironmentContract-based, short-term assignments, often on-site at project locationsFull-time, ongoing roles within companies or consulting firms, on-site or office-based
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by staffing agencies and contractors for specific projects in construction, civil, or mechanical engineeringEmployed directly by companies or firms managing projects in construction, infrastructure, or manufacturing

The main difference is that a Temporary Project Engineer works on short-term, contract basis for specific projects, while a Project Engineer typically holds a permanent, ongoing position within an organization. Both roles require similar credentials and work in similar environments, but their employment terms and duration differ.

Are temporary project engineers in demand?

Temporary project engineers are in demand in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and engineering, especially during peak project periods. Employers seek candidates with strong technical skills, certifications, and the ability to adapt quickly to project needs, making these roles valuable for both companies and professionals seeking flexible work arrangements.

Can a temporary project engineer work remotely?

Temporary project engineers can work remotely depending on the company's policies and the project's requirements. Remote work may require proficiency with collaboration tools and effective communication skills, but availability varies by employer and industry standards.

Can you become a temporary project engineer with no experience?

Temporary project engineer roles typically require some relevant experience or technical knowledge, such as understanding engineering principles and project management tools. About Us
Clark Reder Engineering is a dynamic structural engineering firm specializing in complex and high-visibility projects within the entertainment industry. Known as “The Engineering Behind Entertainment,” our work supports concert stages, live productions, theaters, and innovative structures that bring large-scale experiences to life.
Our engineers play a direct role in delivering projects from concept to completion, combining technical precision with creative problem-solving. With a collaborative team environment and a portfolio spanning thousands of projects across the U.S. and internationally, Clark Reder offers engineers the opportunity to work on unique structures that go far beyond traditional design work.
Position Summary
The Project Engineer is responsible for performing structural analysis and design of temporary and entertainment-related structures, including stage systems, truss structures, and rigging applications, as well as, managing projects, and supporting client relationships across a variety of projects. This role is highly design focused and requires proficiency in structural modeling and engineering applications. The Project Engineer will contribute to the development of structural solutions from concept through execution, with a primary emphasis on analysis, calculation, and design deliverables.
This role provides technical leadership, prepares structural submittal packages, performs field observations, and contributes to project planning and execution. The Project Engineer works independently on small and medium projects and supports larger projects under supervision, with the opportunity to develop into a team leadership role. This role offers the opportunity to work on highly visible, fast-paced projects that are experienced by large audiences, providing a unique alternative to traditional structural engineering work.
Key Responsibilities
Structural Analysis amp; Design
  • Perform detailed structural analysis and design using industry-standard software, including RISA (RISA-3D, RISA Floor) and related tools, on projects with minimal supervision, applying engineering principles and industry standards.
  • Develop and document engineering calculations using Mathcad or similar calculations software.
  • Model and analyze primarily temporary, non-building structures, including truss systems, rigging assemblies, and stage-related structures.
  • Prepare structural calculations, design packages, and supporting documentation for internal and external review.
  • Support review of submittals and fabrication drawings to ensure alignment with design intent, as needed.
  • Review and validate structural designs to ensure compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards.
Project Management amp; Client Relations
  • Manage small to medium-sized projects independently, including scheduling, deliverables, and budget oversight.
  • Assist with project planning, scheduling, and communication of larger projects under guidance from senior engineers or principals. Serve as primary point of contact for clients on assigned projects, leading technical discussions and managing expectations around scope, schedule, and deliverables.
  • Build and maintain trusted client relationships through proactive communication and solution-oriented support.
  • Respond to client inquiries and provide technical guidance as needed.
Field Support amp; Observation
  • Participate in limited field observations as needed to verify design intent and support project execution.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to resolve technical design challenges.
Team Support amp; Development
  • Assist other engineers on larger projects, providing technical input and support.
  • Participate in project reviews and contribute to design solutions.
  • Demonstrate ability to grow into a team leadership role by mentoring junior engineers and contributing to team development initiatives.
Financial amp; Administrative Duties
  • Develop fee estimates and support scope definition in collaboration with principals. Assist with project billing, budget tracking and overall financial performance of assigned projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the engineering team and company operations.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in structural analysis and design, preferably within consulting or design-focused engineering environments.
  • Experience leading small-to-mid size projects and supporting complex, multi-phase projects.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and design software; RISA and Mathcad is required, experience with SAP2000, RAM, or similar tools is preferred.
  • Strong client-facing communication and project management skills.
  • Experience required in entertainment-related structures, temporary structures, truss systems, or rigging applications.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required; structural emphasis strongly preferred. Mechanical Engineering backgrounds will be considered only if accompanied by significant structural design experience.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.

    • Hands-on experience using RISA and Mathcad in a professional setting.
    • Experience working on temporary structures, entertainment structures, or non-building systems.
    • A demonstrated ability to perform engineering calculations and develop design solutions independently.
    • Familiarity with truss systems, rigging, or stage-related structures.
Work Environment
  • Hybrid schedule (2 days remote /3 days in-office in West Chester, OH)
  • Collaborative, team-oriented environment with direct access to senior leadership
  • 40-hour workweek
  • Casual work attire
  • Occasional travel for client meetings
Benefits
