What is a temporary pastor?

Temporary pastors are clergy members who serve a church or congregation for a limited period of time, often during transitions such as when a permanent pastor is being sought or is on leave. Their primary role is to provide spiritual guidance, lead worship services, and support the congregation during the interim period. Temporary pastors may also assist with administrative duties and help maintain continuity in church programs. They are typically appointed by a church council or denominational body and may serve from a few weeks to several months, depending on the church's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary pastor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Pastor, you need a strong background in theology, pastoral care, and sermon preparation, typically supported by a seminary degree and ordination. Familiarity with church management software, worship planning tools, and online communication platforms is often required. Compassion, active listening, and adaptability are vital soft skills for building trust and guiding congregations through transitions. These skills ensure spiritual continuity, effective leadership, and community support during periods of change.

What are the unique challenges a temporary pastor might face when joining an established congregation?

As a Temporary Pastor, you may encounter challenges such as quickly building trust with congregants, adapting to existing church culture, and navigating ongoing programs or initiatives started by previous leadership. Since your tenure is limited, you'll need to focus on effective communication, maintaining continuity in worship and pastoral care, and supporting the congregation through any transitions. Collaboration with church staff, lay leaders, and committees is essential to ensure a smooth interim period and to prepare the congregation for their next permanent pastor.

What is the difference between Temporary Pastor vs Associate Pastor?

However, Temporary Pastors are hired for short-term needs, while Associate Pastors are typically part of the long-term staff team. Understanding these differences helps churches find the right leadership for their needs.

Job description

The Youth & Young Adults Pastor serves the Soldotna Campus by advancing Church on the Rock's Purpose and Vision through pastoral leadership of youth (grades 6-12) and young adult (ages 18-25) ministries. The Soldotna Campus is a setup-and-tear-down campus that meets in a school gym. This role includes both spiritual leadership and hands-on responsibility for creating excellent ministry environments in a shared, portable space.

This position provides consistent discipleship, raises up leaders and Serve Team members, plans gatherings and events, and integrates these ministries into the broader life of the church in alignment with our Purpose, Values, and Campus Constants.

The Youth & Young Adults Pastor reports directly to the Campus Pastor and works collaboratively with the campus team, Central Support, Executive Team, and Central Leadership. This is a pastoral position requiring a minimum of 32 hours per week, including regular office hours and weekend responsibilities. The position is accountable for all stated duties in a way that reflects the heart and mission of Church on the Rock.

Leadership Structure:

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Provide spiritual leadership, pastoral care, and consistent discipleship for students (grades 6-12) and young adults (ages 18-25).
  • Plan and lead weekly gatherings that are biblically grounded, engaging, and aligned with the Purpose, Vision, and Values of Church on the Rock.
  • Build and lead Serve Teams of adult and student leaders for both youth and young adult ministries.
  • Develop and implement outreach strategies to connect with students and young adults in the church and broader community.
  • Organize and oversee special events, camps, retreats, and mission opportunities that foster connection and spiritual growth.
  • Collaborate with parents, volunteers, and pastoral staff to support the faith formation of the next generation.
  • Maintain regular, clear communication with parents, leaders, and students.
  • Support intentional transitions between ministries (Kids to Youth, Youth to Young Adults, Young Adults into church-wide engagement).
  • Attend weekly Soldotna Campus Staff Meeting, All-Campus Programming Meeting, and Pre-Service Meetings as needed.

Environments, Setup & Operations

  • Lead and participate in the weekly setup and tear-down of youth and young adult ministry environments within the shared school gym space.
  • Create welcoming, excellent temporary environments for students and young adults despite the portable nature of the campus.
  • Manage storage, inventory, care, and transport of portable youth ministry equipment and resources.
  • Collaborate closely with the Campus Pastor and overall Serve Teams on campus load-in, load-out, and shared-space coordination.
  • Ensure all youth environments are safe, organized, and ready before doors open, and fully reset after gatherings.

Scheduling and Admin

  • Serve as primary manager for scheduling and coordination of Youth and Young Adult ministry environments, including shoulder-tapping, onboarding, training, and scheduling through COTR platforms.
  • Develop processes that improve team communication, administrative efficiency, and impact for Serve Team members.
  • Create and maintain an annual ministry budget for Youth and Young Adults in coordination with the Campus Pastor and Central finance team.
  • Manage online platforms for youth and young adult ministries (event registration, communication tools, and database accuracy).

Pastoral Care

  • Effectively communicate the Purpose, Vision & Values of COTR to students, young adults, and Serve Team members.
  • Develop and oversee all aspects of Youth & Young Adults Ministries through pastoral leadership and care.
  • Disciple and mentor Serve Team members by nurturing a Christ-centered culture of discipleship and community.
  • Provide oversight of youth and young adult calendaring, planning, weekly scheduling, and communications.
  • Ensure the theological integrity and biblical grounding of all teaching, curriculum, and ministry activities.

Expectations (Other):

  • Care for Serve Team members, students, and young adults in a respectful and Christ-like manner.
  • Function in a manner worthy of your calling as a minister of the Gospel.
  • Protect the reputation and integrity of others through strict confidentiality and accountability.
  • Develop leaders and provide leadership in areas of responsibility.
  • Willingly and consistently participate in campus setup and tear-down rhythms.
  • Act with integrity in all public and private dealings on behalf of COTR or otherwise.
  • Be discrete and discerning regarding sensitive information to which you may be privy.
  • Manage additional responsibilities as assigned and/or agreed upon.

Qualifications:

  • Born-again, baptized, full of the Holy Spirit, and living under the lordship of Jesus.
  • Minimum of three to five years of leadership experience in a church environment (youth or young adult ministry strongly preferred).
  • Current screening form and background check on file.
  • Passion for and demonstrated experience discipling students and young adults.
  • Comfortable and effective working in a portable church / setup-and-tear-down environment (school gym or similar shared space).
  • Ability to lift and move equipment (up to approximately 40-50 lbs) as part of regular weekly ministry rhythms.
  • Delegation and administrative gifting; strong organizational skills.
  • Visionary and entrepreneurial gifting with the ability to execute vision in a temporary space.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Creative, solution-based problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to recruit, train, supervise, inspire, and care for Serve Team members.
  • Strong relational skills and ability to connect with teenagers and young adults.
