What are some typical challenges faced by temporary paralegals when joining a new legal team?

Temporary paralegals often need to quickly adapt to new workflows, software systems, and team dynamics in each assignment. Since they are brought in for immediate needs, they may have limited time for training and must rapidly familiarize themselves with ongoing cases or projects. Building rapport with attorneys and permanent staff is important for effective collaboration, and being flexible and proactive can help overcome these initial hurdles. Strong organizational and communication skills are crucial to ensure seamless integration into the team and successful completion of tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Paralegal, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Paralegal, you need strong legal research, document drafting, and organizational skills, often supported by a paralegal certificate or relevant experience. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, case management software, and e-filing systems is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for handling varied tasks in fast-paced legal environments. These skills and qualities ensure efficient case support, accuracy, and the ability to quickly integrate into different legal teams or projects.

What are temporary paralegals?

Temporary paralegals are legal professionals who are hired for a fixed period or to assist with specific projects, such as large cases, document reviews, or when permanent staff are unavailable. They perform many of the same duties as regular paralegals, including conducting legal research, drafting documents, and supporting attorneys. Temporary paralegals are often employed through staffing agencies or directly by law firms and may work on-site or remotely, depending on the employer's needs.

What Does a Temporary Paralegal Do?

As a temporary paralegal, your job is to provide legal services to an attorney or law firm for the duration of an assignment. In this role, you may provide administrative support, research relevant cases or legislation, help answer questions from clients, and perform other tasks as directed by an attorney. A temporary paralegal usually works by contract, though contracts may be extended as needed. Other aspects of this job depend on the specific needs of the attorney or law firm. For example, lawyers may hire you to cover for another paralegal while that staff member is on vacation, or to help them manage an unusually high number of cases.

Job description

Lawyers on Demand, a Consilio company is actively recruiting for a temporary, Civil Litigation Paralegal role for a part-time, remote role for a client of ours in Georgia.

Position Type: Part-Time, Remote

Hours: Approximately 20 hours per week to start, with opportunity to increase over time

Location: Remote; Georgia-based candidates or candidates with Georgia court experience

About the Role

We are seeking a versatile and experienced Civil Litigation Paralegal to support a busy legal practice that serves as outside general counsel for a variety of small businesses. This role is ideal for a “jack-of-all-trades” paralegal who is comfortable handling both litigation support and general legal administrative responsibilities in a fast-paced, client-focused environment.

The ideal candidate will have strong civil litigation experience, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities with minimal supervision. Experience using the Clio billing and practice management system is strongly preferred, and Clio certification is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support attorneys with civil litigation matters from intake through resolution.
  • Draft, format, and file pleadings, discovery, correspondence, and other legal documents.
  • Assist with case management, calendaring, deadlines, and trial preparation.
  • Coordinate communications with clients, courts, opposing counsel, vendors, and third parties.
  • Maintain organized digital case files and matter records.
  • Assist with billing, time entry, invoicing, and matter tracking through Clio.
  • Provide general legal and administrative support for matters involving small business clients.
  • Help manage a variety of legal tasks related to general counsel services for small companies.
  • Conduct basic legal and factual research as needed.
  • Ensure deadlines, filings, and client communications are handled accurately and professionally.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience as a civil litigation paralegal required.
  • Strong familiarity with litigation procedures, court filings, discovery, and legal deadlines.
  • Experience with Clio is strongly preferred.
  • Clio certification is a major plus.
  • Experience working with Georgia courts is preferred but not required.
  • Georgia-based candidates are preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Comfortable supporting a small business/general counsel-focused legal practice.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters and shifting priorities.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is resourceful, proactive, and comfortable wearing multiple hats. This person should be equally capable of assisting with litigation tasks, client communications, billing support, document management, and general paralegal responsibilities. A strong working knowledge of Clio is the most important technical qualification for this role.
