Job description
Calvin University invites applications for up to three tenure-track faculty positions, one designated for the Data Science Programs, one for the Department of Computer Science, and one for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Each of these positions will begin August 2024. Candidates at all levels of experience will be considered. Successful data science candidates could join either the Department of Computer Science or the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, depending on their background and interests.
REQUIREMENTS
The university seeks applicants with vibrant Christian faith who are dedicated to integration of that faith with their field of study.
Ideal candidates will hold a PhD in data science, computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field. Candidates with a master's degree and five years of relevant experience will also be considered.
We are looking for candidates who can provide excellent instruction and have an active stream of relevant research and publication. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching using a variety of methods and instructional technology.
The university will prioritize candidates with broad interdisciplinary interests, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, ability to integrate questions of meaning, significance, and ethics into all course content, and deep commitment to engaging students beyond the classroom.
FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES
Faculty loads are 24 semester hours per academic year, comprised of teaching and release time for research and other duties.
Faculty are expected to grow in Reformed Christian commitment, to pursue an active scholarly agenda, to teach effectively, and to serve the university, department, students, and the wider community. Candidates will be asked to affirm their commitment to the educational mission of Calvin University as a Christian liberal arts university in the Reformed tradition, affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church. (See Educating for Shalom and Faculty Expectations.) Calvin University provides numerous faculty development opportunities to foster growth in these commitments.

The University hosts a number of Centers and Institutes and provides other funding opportunities to support faculty teaching and research, including sabbaticals, grants, course releases, summer research stipends, travel funds, and student research opportunities.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENTS
The Data Science Program is a joint effort of the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The undergraduate major includes courses in programming, statistics, machine learning, visualization, ethics, and various electives. The program also includes two undergraduate minors, a new online MS program is being launched Fall 2023, and courses co-taught with the School of Business. For details about these programs, see the web pages for Data Science and for the new MS program. We seek faculty who are interested in shaping both the undergraduate and graduate programs.
The Department of Computer Science includes six tenure-track faculty members and a full-time systems engineer to support classes and research in the department. Computer Science especially seeks candidates in machine learning or programming languages, but candidates in all fields are encouraged to apply. The department offers a minor and two majors, including a BCS degree accredited by ABET. For details, see the web page for Computer Science.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics includes ten tenure-track faculty in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education and offers majors in mathematics, statistics, and actuarial science. In addition, the department supports and advises secondary mathematics education students as they complete grades 5-9 and grades 7-12 certification programs. For additional information consult the Mathematics and Statistics web site. Applications in any area of mathematics or statistics are welcome; preference will be given to applicants with experience and interests that support the programs in statistics and actuarial science.
Together these departments feature supportive colleagues, excellent facilities, disciplined students, including many international students, support for women in STEM, and strong undergraduate majors. Faculty offices for the two departments are co-located, fostering collaboration and communication between the two departments.
