Job description

Position Overview This is a 1-year Post-Baccalaureate term position with a target start date of August 2026 Primary Function: Provide Geographic Information Systems (GIS) support on campus through the Landscape Analysis Lab by creating maps, creating and updating spatial data, and conducting spatial analyses for a variety of campus departments, offices, faculty, staff, and students This position receives general supervision. Broad instructions are provided, and the staff member uses judgment and experience to carry out assignments. Completed assignments and finished products are reviewed by the supervisor after completion.

Position Appointment Details: Career Band: NE8 Hourly Temporary 12-month position This is a 1-year Post-Baccalaureate term position with a target start date of August 2026 Position Description Typical Duties & Responsibilities: To provide GIS support for the University of the South. As part of that primary responsibility, this position will; Support geospatial analysis of the Domain, including but not limited to faculty research, student projects, independent studies, faculty, staff, and student requests, and training of staff or students in specialized software. Create, update, maintain, and document GIS data for the Domain, including online and local data and resources.

Collect and update data in and around Sewanee using Esri data collection apps and GPS. Create new and updated online web maps, web apps, hub portals, and story maps. Tracks all activities and reports weekly to the supervisor (LAL Manager).

Machines & Equipment Used: Computer use, GPS, some field data collection using a cell phone or tablet apps, Potential use of UAV (drone) for aerial video and imagery acquisition. Judgment Required: The performance of the essential duties of this position is dependent upon independent ingenuity and developmental efforts. Budgetary Responsibility: Monitors expenditures against budget; prepares budget data for review/approval by supervisor/department head.

Personal Interaction/Communication: Student Contact: Multiple backgrounds, interests, and majors who are looking for GIS assistance Internal: Internal interaction with various departments, looking for GIS assistance as delegated by the supervisor. External: Only rare interaction with external agencies as delegated by the supervisor. Most likely with agencies such as town planners and architects working with the University of the South, and referred to LAL by an internal department.

Attributes of a Successful Candidate Application Materials: Resume, Transcripts and 2 References Education: Bachelor's degree. Experience: Experience or classroom comparable to an introductory and advanced GIS course (ex, ENST 217 and 317). Job-Related Skills: Required: Experience and competence with ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online Recommended: Familiarity with ArcGIS Online story maps and web apps Esri data collection apps such as Survey 123, Collector, and Field Maps Esri Workforce Lidar processing Image analysis, GNSS.

Licenses & Certifications: Driver's License Supplemental Information Working Environment: Office and domain.
