Linux Systems Administrator (AWS & Legacy Application Modernization)

Location: Hybrid (Kansas City, MO Area)

Employment Type: Contract with Potential for Extension/Conversion

Schedule: Standard business hours with occasional after-hours support as needed

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Linux Systems Administrator to support a large-scale infrastructure modernization initiative involving the migration of legacy business applications from a traditional mainframe environment to a modern Linux-based cloud platform.

This role is focused on systems administration and platform support, ensuring the stability, performance, and ongoing maintenance of critical enterprise applications running on Linux infrastructure. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in Linux administration, cloud environments, and Rocket Software (formerly Micro Focus) technologies supporting COBOL-based workloads.

The successful candidate will join an established migration program and play a key role in supporting project completion, operational readiness, knowledge transfer activities, and long-term infrastructure support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer and maintain enterprise Linux environments, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and SUSE Linux.
  • Perform system patching, upgrades, software installations, deployments, and performance tuning.
  • Support Rocket Enterprise Server environments hosting COBOL applications on Linux platforms.
  • Provide infrastructure support for legacy application modernization and cloud migration initiatives.
  • Monitor system health, troubleshoot production issues, and implement corrective actions.
  • Document system configurations, operational procedures, and support processes.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, development, cloud, and application teams to ensure platform stability.
  • Participate in knowledge transfer sessions and contribute to operational readiness efforts.
  • Support enterprise workloads running within AWS cloud environments.
  • Assist with post-migration stabilization and transition to steady-state operations.
  • Provide occasional after-hours support for critical incidents and scheduled maintenance activities.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of Linux systems administration experience.
  • Strong experience administering Red Hat and/or SUSE Linux environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Rocket Enterprise Server (formerly Micro Focus Enterprise Server).
  • Familiarity supporting Rocket Enterprise Developer environments.
  • Experience deploying and maintaining Linux workloads in AWS.
  • Strong command-line administration and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience performing system upgrades, patch management, and application deployments.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting COBOL-based application environments.
