Summary
Cashiers are responsible for greeting and assisting customers while providing excellent customer service. Next, cashiers are responsible for seeing that the payment transactions for merchandise and prescriptions go smoothly, efficiently and quickly. Cashiers need to be team players, willing to help out everywhere in the pharmacy. Cashiers need to possess excellent communication and customer service skills, stamina to stand for long periods of time, and patience dealing with long lines and possibly frustrated customers. Cashiers are also responsible for the retail pharmacy’s over-the-counter (OTC) inventory, cash register drawers and must be able to verify and process insurance payments for prescription items for customers.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Greet customers when they arrive and provide excellent customer service.
  • Complete patient purchase transactions smoothly, quickly, efficiently, and in a friendly manner.
  • Demonstrate willingness to learn, taking in constructive criticism well and ready to improve.
  • Demonstrate multi-tasking, organizing skills, and be very detail oriented and patient.
  • Enter customer demographic and insurance information into the pharmacy’s prescription processing software.
  • Verify insurance coverage, and troubleshoot issues by calling insurance companies and workers’ compensation carriers as necessary.
  • Computes or re-computes bills, itemized lists and tickets showing amount due.
  • Manage cash register drawers including troubleshooting credit card vendors, software updates, and accurate cash handling, returns and assists with closing out the register as required.
  • Assist in bookkeeping duties including batching registers nightly, collecting and tracking accounts and Accounts Receivables from customers.
  • Record totals shown on cash drawer registers tape and verify against cash on hand.
  • Make deposits to the bank and change orders as necessary.
  • Manage the retail pharmacy’s front end over-the-counter (OTC) section.
  • Track OTC inventory and order items as necessary with oversight of pharmacist.
  • Research new items of interest for consideration for retail over-the-counter (OTC) section sale.
  • Order specialty items per customer requests from our drug wholesalers/warehouses.
  • Organize and clean the front end daily and keep it clutter-free.
  • Sort and tag the pharmacy’s over-the-counter (OTC) order daily.
  • Demonstrate Health System Values in performance and behavior.
  • Comply with Health System policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
