What is a temporary academic advisor?

A Temporary Academic Advisor is a professional hired on a short-term or contract basis to assist students with course selection, academic planning, and navigating university requirements. They provide guidance on degree requirements, help students set academic goals, and connect them with campus resources. Temporary Academic Advisors perform similar duties as permanent advisors but are typically employed to cover staff shortages, peak advising periods, or special projects. Their goal is to support student success and retention during their assignment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary academic advisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Academic Advisor, you need a background in education or counseling, strong knowledge of academic policies, and typically a bachelor's degree. Familiarity with student information systems, scheduling software, and sometimes FERPA certification is important. Excellent interpersonal skills, active listening, and problem-solving abilities help build trust and guide students effectively. These competencies ensure students receive accurate guidance and support, promoting their academic success and institutional retention.

What are some common challenges faced by temporary academic advisors, and how can they be addressed?

Temporary Academic Advisors often encounter the challenge of quickly learning institutional policies, procedures, and student support resources due to the limited duration of their roles. They may also need to rapidly build rapport with students and colleagues to effectively support academic planning and retention. To succeed, it is helpful to proactively seek out onboarding materials, attend training sessions, and communicate regularly with permanent advising staff. Leveraging available advising tools and maintaining detailed notes can also streamline the transition and ensure continuity for students.
