Position Description
The Anoka County Sheriff's Office mission is to protect and serve the community in a manner that preserves the public trust. The department has an immediate opening for Court Security Deputy - Temp who will perform various duties. Some of the critical responsibilities of this position include ensuring the protection of judges, court officers, county employees, witnesses and civilians in the courtroom, adjacent waiting areas and county offices.
This is a temporary, non-exempt, on-site position. These part-time, temporary positions are intermittent up to 21 hours per week. The schedule will generally be daytime hours, Monday through Friday.

Work Location
  • This position will work at the Anoka County Courthouse located at 2100 3rd Avenue, Anoka, MN.
  • Expected work hours are up to 21 hours per week based on departmental needs.
  • The schedule will generally be daytime hours, Monday through Friday.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Court Security Deputy - Temp.
  • Provide court security duties. Call the court to order. Escort in-custody defendants to and from court.
  • Maintain order in the courtroom, ensuring the litigants, attorneys, court employees, and spectators conduct themselves appropriately.
  • Protect and guard court exhibits and deliver the verdict to the judge.
  • Set up search operations to screen members of the public who seek admittance to the courtrooms.
  • Work and cooperate with jail employees to safely supervise inmate movement from jail facility to courts.
  • Investigate and prepare reports on accidents and offenses.
  • Assist in serving warrants, summons and other processes on persons.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed
  • Requires an associate's degree and at least 2 years of job-related experience
  • In lieu of the required education, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis
  • Must currently be licensed or license eligible by the Minnesota Board of Peace Offices Standard and Training as a full-time peace officer OR retired in good standing as a peace officer in the state of Minnesota and current with POST license requirements
  • Must successfully complete a thorough background investigation

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed
  • Degree in Criminal Justice of related field
  • Knowledge of laws, judicial procedures, regulations, rules and guidelines related to crime and evidence
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Physical Demands and Work Conditions
  • Standard office environment, travel to various county work sites both indoor and outdoor, may include emergency or disaster response sites in uncontrolled environments depending on assignment
  • Work activities may require contact with uncooperative, angry, and sometimes hostile clients depending on assignment
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness
  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds
  • Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties
  • Cognitive abilities required include problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short- and long-term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills
  • Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing
  • Physical activity may include repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment
  • Regular lifting of 0-25 lbs., occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs.
  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to public safety equipment depending on assignment
  • Public safety equipment may include but is not limited to radios, cameras, GPS devices, radiological testing equipment such as portal monitors and Geiger counters depending on assignment, and personal protective equipment
  • Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle
  • Additional physical/mental requirements that occur may not be listed above, but are inherent in performing the position's essential functions
  • Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious agents, radiation, toxic or caustic chemicals, airborne particles, fumes, or other hazards is possible while performing essential duties

No tattoos, scars or brands that qualify as "unauthorized Tattoos" under the sheriff's Office Policy 1044.3 are allowed under any circumstances by any member of the Anoka County Sheriff's Office. Tattoos that cover more than 50 percent of the exposed area of the arm while wearing an unaltered short-sleeved shirt must be covered by a long- sleeved shirt while the employee is representing the Anoka County Sheriff's Office. The exposed area is the area from the bend of the wrist to the shirt sleeve. Tattoos on the head, face, neck, or hands are prohibited. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for tattoos of rings on fingers. (Complete policy available upon request).

Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.
