Job description

Vice President, DevelopmentWe are seeking a talented and experienced project developer to expand 38 Degrees North's distributed energy pipeline across battery storage, community solar, and behind-the-meter projects. This position is for someone who has carried distributed projects through the development cycle and is excited to apply that experience inside a growing, entrepreneurial platform with established distributed generation and community solar businesses.The VP of Development will work alongside our existing development, investment, and EPC teams to advance a broad portfolio that spans standalone and solar-paired battery storage, community solar, behind-the-meter (C&I) solar and storage, and emerging virtual power plant and aggregation opportunities across our core markets, including PJM, NYISO, ISO-NE, and MISO. Day to day, the VP will own a portfolio of projects from site identification through Notice to Proceed, including interconnection, permitting, real estate, and offtake. The role is hands-on and execution-focused, and we are looking for someone self-sufficient who can drive projects independently while collaborating closely with the rest of the team.We are a growing entrepreneurial company, and the VP will have the opportunity to shape how 38DN approaches distributed energy development and work directly with senior leadership on market strategy.ResponsibilitiesOriginate and screen greenfield opportunities across standalone and solar-paired storage, community solar, and behind-the-meter projects through landowner and host outreach, broker relationships, and partnerships with co-developers and EPCsLead site selection and feasibility screening, including hosting capacity review, substation and feeder analysis, surplus interconnection, and behind-the-meter load and tariff analysisManage interconnection from study request through executed ISA, working with utilities and ISOs on system impact studies, facilities studies, and network upgrade negotiation across both distribution-level and transmission-level queuesDrive permitting and AHJ engagement, including zoning, special use, site plan, and NFPA 855 fire code reviewSupport revenue contracting and program awards, including community solar enrollment, state storage RFPs, VDER and net metering, capacity market participation, and tolling, ancillary services, or aggregation arrangements, in coordination with the investment teamCoordinate with the investment team on project economics across technologies, including storage duration and augmentation, solar production, and behind-the-meter savings and resiliency valueManage external consultants across engineering, environmental, title, survey, and legal workstreamsPrepare development artifacts that support tax equity and debt diligence, in coordination with the capital markets teamHand off Ready-to-Build projects to EPC and construction with complete diligence packagesTrack regulatory and market developments, including FERC orders such as Order 2222 on distributed energy aggregation, ISO queue reform, state storage and community solar targets, ITC adders, and grandfathering rules, and surface implications for the pipelineCollaborate closely with development, investment, EPC, and asset management team membersRepresent 38DN at industry conferences, regulatory proceedings, and counterparty meetingsQualifications8+ years of experience in renewable energy project development, with meaningful experience across distributed energy resources such as battery storage, community solar, or behind-the-meter generationDemonstrated track record advancing distributed generation and storage projects through the development cycle, ideally across multiple ISO or utility jurisdictionsStrong technical fluency in one or more of storage, solar PV, and behind-the-meter systems, with the ability to evaluate spec sheets, warranties, augmentation plans, and EPC scopesWorking familiarity with interconnection processes in at least two of PJM, NYISO, ISO-NE, and MISO, including distribution-level interconnection, queue reform mechanics, and capacity rightsWorking knowledge of state distributed energy programs and revenue structures relevant to our markets, such as NY VDER, Community Distributed Generation, and Index Storage, NJ SEP and Community Solar, MA SMART and CES, and PJM capacity and aggregationExperience negotiating land and site agreements, ISAs, EPC contracts, and offtake, subscription, or tolling arrangementsSolid understanding of distributed project economics, cost drivers, and development-stage risk managementExperience managing permitting and AHJ engagement across multiple jurisdictions, including NFPA 855 fire code complianceSelf-motivated and self-sufficient, with the ability to drive projects independently while working effectively as part of a teamExcellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skillsAbility to manage multiple workstreams under deadline pressureBachelor's degree required; technical degree or advanced degree is a plusWillingness to travel as needed for site visits, AHJ meetings, conferences, and counterparty engagementVirtual power plant, aggregation, and behind-the-meter C&I experience is a plusExisting relationships with utilities, ISOs, capacity market participants, community solar administrators, and storage offtakers are a plusTeam player, sense of humor, and mission-driven mindsetBenefitsCompetitive salary and performance-based cash bonusesParticipation in our employee incentive planSafe Harbor 401(k) savings plan and Cash Balance PlanMedical, long-term disability, vision & dental plans availableProfessional development opportunitiesLocationThis is a hybrid position.
