The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. Salary

The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $127,332 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $87,408 - $127,332 per year (Step 1 - Step 20); Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience. Step placement upon appointment is not expected to exceed Step 20 ($127,332 per year). Future increases, including step advancement, are subject to contract negotiations.

Position Information

The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking a SQL Server Database Administrator to provide Microsoft SQL Server database administration support to developers and application support personnel at the Chancellor's Office (CO). Tasks include conceptualizing, developing, and implementing complex database, application, and integration capabilities. Additional expectations include performing tasks related to security, administration, tuning and monitoring, backup and restoration, creation of data exchange and interchange mechanisms such as Boomi, SSIS and DTS packages, SQL and SQL Reporting support, data modeling and normalization. This position will ensure that all in-house and third-party applications that are dependent on Microsoft SQL Server at the CO continue to demonstrate high levels of performance and reliability. The position will ensure that database access complies with the standards and policies of the CSU.

This position is approved for telecommuting (two days telecommuting, three days in office (in-person)) with onsite work at the main headquarters located in Long Beach, California.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Productivity Services, the SQL Server Database Administrator will perform duties as outlined below:

-Plan the migration of on-prem Microsoft SQL databases to Azure databases and Azure managed instances and execute technical work to move databases and ensure proper operations.

-Designing and implementing database schema changes.

-Leading and performing SQL Server installations and upgrades.

-Setting up SQL Server and Azure SQL databases and Azure managed instances.

-Maintaining revisions/versions of SQL Server databases while ensuring compatibility of the revisions/versions with existing applications.

-Implementing and supporting SQL Reporting Services.

-Integrating SQL Reporting services with other tools such as Boomi, ServiceNow, and SharePoint.

-Developing and tuning complex SQL statements and views for reporting.

-Providing on-call assistance for the IT Support Center (Help Desk) and responding accordingly to reports of trouble as presented (which may include evenings and weekends).

-Providing development and testing support to multiple application development and support teams.

-Working with data center and application teams to resolve problems, outages, or slowdowns.

-Providing runtime optimization, capacity management and planning, security administration, configuration, scheduling, and execution of maintenance utilities.

-Configure and manage database monitoring tools to ensure performance against established standards regarding reliability and response time.

-Managing systems for high availability.

-Being responsible for backups and coordinating backups with the data center administrator.

-Effectively analyzing matters and exercising good judgment to achieve IT objectives within specified timetables.

-Taking ownership of Business Continuity / Disaster Recovery Responsibilities for all SQL Server databases.

-Proactively monitor database and database server platform health, and exercise sound judgment in addressing performance issues in a timely manner and based on best practices, system standards, and technology policies.

-Recommend improvements to existing processes, procedures, and technical configurations.

This position will also assist with special projects as needed, including determining requirements, selecting and implementing new tools and technologies, and designing and developing customer training and solutions.

Application development responsibilities include:

-Meeting with stakeholders to identify business solutions needs.

-Using our low-code, no-code application development tool to create solutions.

-Develop solutions and assist in user acceptance testing.

-Assist in solution delivery and documentation.

-Leads and innovates processes, process automation, and documentation with an emphasis on increasing efficiency and effectiveness of database setup and configuration, processes, and workflows, including APIs, using tools such as Boomi, N8N, and ServiceNow.

The SQL Server Database Administrator is also responsible for any other duties as assigned. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for keeping current in the industry, including technology changes, trends, and best practices. The incumbent is also responsible for addressing any technical operations concerns with the appropriate supervisor.

Qualifications

This position requires:

-Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent work-related experience.

-Three to Five years of professional experience supporting Microsoft SQL Server.

-Microsoft SQL DBA certification desired.

-Experience with ServiceNow preferred.

-Experience in analyzing error and event logs to detect trends or anomalies that could impact database performance.

-Experience in the setup and use of database monitoring tools such as SQL Power Tools, Idera, & Nagios.

-Experience in the setup, configuration, and use of SQL Reporting Services.

-Experience in the setup, configuration, and use of SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and other data interchange tools such as Boomi.

-Experience supporting SQL Server in a SharePoint and Project Server environment.

-Proficiency in Microsoft Office Productivity Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Visio) is required.
