Overview
SCA Telecommunications Mechanic I (2026-25868):
Bowhead seeks a Telecommunications Mechanic I to support the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) of the Base Telecommunications System (BTS) at Goodfellow Air Force Base. The selected candidate will assist with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of voice, data, fiber optic, and copper telecommunications systems supporting critical Air Force communications infrastructure. This position is ideal for an entry-level or developing telecommunications technician looking to build experience while working alongside experienced professionals in a mission-critical environment.
Responsibilities
Essential functions will include:
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair telecommunications equipment and infrastructure under the direction of senior technicians.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and corrective maintenance on telecommunications systems.
  • Install, terminate, test, and label copper and fiber optic cabling.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, ladders, and telecommunications test equipment safely and effectively.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, work orders, and engineering drawings.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and other required documentation.
  • Respond to routine service requests and assist with emergency outage restoration as required.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, coworkers, supervisors, and Government personnel.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comply with all applicable safety, security, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Distinguish colors for cable identification, wiring, and testing.
  • Possess sufficient visual acuity and manual dexterity to perform detailed telecommunications installation and repair work.
  • Operate Government or company vehicles as required.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and work overtime, evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency call-outs when required to support mission requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Education
    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Technical training in telecommunications, electronics, electrical technology, networking, or a related field preferred.
    • An equivalent combination of education, vocational training, military experience, and directly related telecommunications experience may be substituted for formal education.
  • Years of experience
    • One (1) or more years of experience in telecommunications, structured cabling, low-voltage systems, electrical systems, or a related technical field.
    • Experience installing, maintaining, or troubleshooting copper and/or fiber optic cabling preferred.
    • Basic knowledge of telecommunications installation, maintenance, and testing procedures.
    • Experience using hand tools, power tools, and basic telecommunications test equipment.
    • Military telecommunications or technical experience is a plus.
    • Experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD) or Federal telecommunications contracts is preferred but not required.
  • Required skills or certifications
    • Basic knowledge of telecommunications systems, structured cabling, and low-voltage infrastructure.
    • Ability to install, terminate, test, and troubleshoot copper and fiber optic cabling under the guidance of senior technicians.
    • Basic understanding of telecommunications installation practices, safety procedures, and industry standards.
    • Ability to read and interpret work orders, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and installation drawings.
    • Experience using common hand tools, power tools, and basic telecommunications test equipment.
    • Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively within a team environment.
    • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team

Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time
  • Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must currently hold a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: There are currently no Security Clearance requirements for this position; however, candidates must be able to successfully pass a background check. Due to the location of this work, US Citizenship is required. Bowhead reserves the right to change this requirement if necessitated by business needs or contractual obligations.
