What does a technical sales specialist do?

A Technical Sales Specialist is responsible for selling complex technical products or services to businesses and customers. They combine in-depth product knowledge with strong sales skills to understand customer needs and present appropriate solutions. This role often involves explaining technical details, conducting product demonstrations, and working closely with engineering or product teams to ensure customer requirements are met. Technical Sales Specialists also build and maintain customer relationships and may provide post-sales support.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a technical sales specialist?

To excel as a Technical Sales Specialist, you need a strong understanding of the relevant industry technology, sales strategies, and typically a degree in engineering, business, or a related field. Familiarity with CRM platforms, product demonstration tools, and technical documentation is often required. Exceptional communication, active listening, and problem-solving skills help build strong client relationships and effectively convey complex concepts. These combined abilities are crucial to driving sales growth, meeting customer needs, and supporting long-term business success.

How do technical sales specialists balance technical expertise with sales targets in their daily work?

Technical Sales Specialists often face the challenge of bridging the gap between complex product knowledge and effective sales strategies. On a typical day, they might split their time between meeting with clients to understand their technical needs, collaborating with engineering teams for product customization, and following up on sales leads to meet quotas. Success in this role relies on the ability to translate technical features into business benefits while maintaining strong client relationships and staying on top of sales goals. Regular training and close teamwork with both sales and technical departments help manage these diverse responsibilities.

This position requires manual dexterity for typing, sitting at a desk, and looking at a computer screen for long periods of time. In addition, portions of the training require you to shadow other departments that may require physical activity, including lifting 25-50 pounds and standing for long periods of time.
