What is a technical programs manager?

Technical Programs Managers (TPMs) are professionals responsible for overseeing and coordinating complex technical projects and programs within an organization. TPMs manage project timelines, resources, and risks while facilitating communication across teams. Their role often involves strategic planning, technical problem-solving, and driving cross-functional collaboration.

Job description

Drive the evolution of Amazon's advertising technology platform by leading strategic technical programs that impact millions of advertisers worldwide. You'll shape how businesses reach customers through Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands, Amazon DSP, and emerging ad technologies by orchestrating complex initiatives across multiple engineering teams and organizations.
Key job responsibilities
- Own end-to-end program management for strategic advertising technology initiatives, coordinating delivery across multiple engineering teams, product organizations, and business stakeholders
- Drive technical strategy and roadmap alignment by facilitating collaboration between engineering, product, science, and business teams to ensure shared vision and priorities
- Lead cross-functional teams through complex technical challenges in areas such as ad serving, campaign management, measurement, and optimization
- Establish program governance and accountability mechanisms including metrics, reporting structures, and visibility frameworks that support informed decision-making at senior leadership levels
- Identify and mitigate risks across large-scale distributed systems, working proactively with engineering leaders to address technical and operational challenges before they impact service delivery
A day in the life
In this role, you'll focus on stewarding large-scale technical programs that span our advertising campaign creation technology platform.

You might start your day reviewing program metrics and stakeholder feedback on a current initiative, then transition into a technical design review with engineering leaders to evaluate architectural approaches for scaling our ad serving systems. You'll collaborate with product and science teams to align on roadmap priorities, facilitate cross-functional problem-solving sessions to navigate complex technical challenges, and prepare executive summaries for leadership reviews. Your work extends beyond traditional program management-you'll mentor other technical program managers, identify emerging risks in our distributed systems, and champion process improvements that enhance how teams coordinate and deliver.

About the team
We serve small business owners, sellers, large and sophisticated advertisers, agencies, and integrators who depend on our platform to plan, buy, measure, and optimize their programmatic campaigns. Our team is focused on creating intuitive, strong media buying experiences that help our customers achieve their goals efficiently. We're committed to evolving our product strategy to meet changing advertiser needs while building toward a future where agentic capabilities enhance and streamline key workflows.

As a member of this group, you'll work closely with product, engineering, and business partners across Amazon Ads to shape the direction of our platform and deliver meaningful improvements to how campaigns are created and managed and deliver both immediate impact and long-term strategic value.
