What is a technical programs manager?

Technical Programs Managers (TPMs) are professionals responsible for overseeing and coordinating complex technical projects and programs within an organization. They bridge the gap between engineering teams and business stakeholders, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with company goals. TPMs manage project timelines, resources, and risks while facilitating communication across teams. Their role often involves strategic planning, technical problem-solving, and driving cross-functional collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical programs manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Programs Manager, you need a solid background in project management, technical expertise in relevant domains, and a bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira or Asana, and certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master, are commonly required. Exceptional leadership, stakeholder management, and effective communication skills help you drive cross-functional teams toward shared goals. These skills ensure that complex technical projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the highest quality standards.

Job description

We believe that the way people interact with their finances will drastically improve in the next few years. We're dedicated to empowering this transformation by building the tools and experiences that thousands of developers use to create their own products. Plaid powers the tools millions of people rely on to live a healthier financial life. We work with thousands of companies like Venmo, SoFi, several of the Fortune 500, and many of the largest banks to make it easy for people to connect their financial accounts to the apps and services they want to use. Plaid's network covers 12,000 financial institutions across the US, Canada, UK and Europe. Founded in 2013, the company is headquartered in San Francisco with offices in New York, Washington D.C., London and Amsterdam.
We lead complex technical programs that help Plaid scale its engineering platform. We partner across Engineering, Infrastructure, Data, Security, ML, Legal, and Product to deliver company-wide technical initiatives that improve reliability, scalability, and developer productivity. You'll lead strategic technical programs from planning through execution. You'll partner with engineering leaders to align stakeholders, manage dependencies, drive decisions, and ensure successful delivery of complex initiatives. You'll work across a variety of technical domains, adapting quickly to new challenges and helping teams execute effectively.
As a Technical Program Manager, you will lead high-impact, cross-functional initiatives. As a generalist, you may work on a variety of programs. An example is one that strengthens Plaid's data and machine learning platforms. You will partner with engineering, product, data, legal, privacy, and business stakeholders to drive complex technical programs from planning through execution. Your work will help improve data governance, modernize machine learning infrastructure, and accelerate the adoption of trusted, high-quality datasets that power analytics, artificial intelligence, and product innovation. Success in this role requires strong program management, stakeholder alignment, and the ability to drive execution across multiple teams while ensuring strategic initiatives are delivered on time and at scale.
Responsibilities:
  • Lead complex, cross-functional programs that deliver high-impact technical initiatives across the organization.
  • Drive end-to-end program execution by managing plans, milestones, dependencies, risks, and stakeholder communication across engineering and product organizations.
  • Partner with engineering, product, data, legal, privacy, and business teams to align on priorities, scope, and success metrics.
  • Enable the adoption of standardized processes and best practices for data governance, platform modernization, and trusted data management.
  • Remove execution blockers, monitor progress against program goals, and provide regular updates to leadership.
  • Foster collaboration across multiple organizations to deliver scalable solutions that improve data quality, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Communicate progress to technical and executive stakeholders.
  • Improve execution frameworks and program health.

Qualifications:
  • 6+ years leading complex technical programs.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture and engineering systems.
  • Experience driving cross-functional programs involving multiple engineering teams.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
  • Experience with data platforms, infrastructure, ML platforms, or developer productivity is a strong plus.
  • Prior experience in fintech or another highly regulated environment is a strong plus.

Our mission at Plaid is to unlock financial freedom for everyone. To support that mission, we seek to build a diverse team of driven individuals who care deeply about making the financial ecosystem more equitable. We recognize that strong qualifications can come from both prior work experiences and lived experiences. We encourage you to apply to a role even if your experience doesn't fully match the job description. We are always looking for team members that will bring something unique to Plaid!
