What are Technical Programs Managers?

Technical Programs Managers (TPMs) are professionals responsible for overseeing and coordinating complex technical projects and programs within an organization. They bridge the gap between engineering teams and business stakeholders, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with company goals. TPMs manage project timelines, resources, and risks while facilitating communication across teams. Their role often involves strategic planning, technical problem-solving, and driving cross-functional collaboration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Programs Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Programs Manager, you need a solid background in project management, technical expertise in relevant domains, and a bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira or Asana, and certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master, are commonly required. Exceptional leadership, stakeholder management, and effective communication skills help you drive cross-functional teams toward shared goals. These skills ensure that complex technical projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the highest quality standards.

Role Overview
The Senior Technical Program Manager - Cybersecurity is a senior execution leader responsible for driving delivery across Vertafore's cybersecurity portfolio. This role partners closely with Cybersecurity, Development, Architecture, TechOps, Product, and Compliance teams to execute complex, cross-functional initiatives that strengthen Vertafore's Cybersecurity posture while enabling business velocity.
The TPM combines strong cybersecurity and SaaS domain knowledge with disciplined program and project management to ensure initiatives are delivered predictably, risks and dependencies are actively managed, and outcomes are measurable. This role owns execution rigor and transparency across security programs spanning products, platforms, and corporate technology, while supporting audit readiness and long-term initiatives such as Zero Trust, identity modernization, secure access, and data protection.
Key Responsibilities
As part of the Technical PMO team within CTO Strategic Operations in the Office of the CTO, this role focuses on driving execution, alignment, and outcomes across high impact cybersecurity initiatives that span the legal, technology, and product organizations.
Cybersecurity Program Execution & Risk Reduction
  • Drive delivery of defined cybersecurity initiatives from planning through completion, focused on measurable risk reduction.
  • Translate cybersecurity strategy, architecture, and regulatory needs into scoped plans with clear milestones and outcomes.
  • Manage risks, dependencies, and cross team blockers across Cybersecurity, Development, Architecture, and TechOps.
  • Track and communicate program level progress and impact.
  • Effectively close projects with clear expectations for ongoing governance and business as usual (BAU) rigor.

Cybersecurity Controls, Audit & Compliance (Programmatic Focus)
  • Lead initiative-based delivery of cybersecurity controls and remediation efforts across partner teams.
  • Coordinate remediation planning and tracking for items like audits, assessments, control changes and risk reviews.
  • Ensure controls are implemented with durability and audit readiness in mind.

Strategic Cybersecurity Enablement
  • Execute initiatives that advance Vertafore's multi-year security roadmap.
  • Support Zero Trust programs across identity, access, application, and data protection.
  • Enable secure adoption of AI enabled capabilities through appropriate guardrails and sequencing.

AI Enabled Program Management
  • Use AI assisted tools to enhance planning, risk identification, dependency management, reporting, and decision support.
  • Apply sound judgment to ensure responsible, accurate, and compliant use of AI in program execution.

Cross Functional Leadership & Communication
  • Act as a trusted execution partner across Cybersecurity, Development, Architecture, TechOps, Product, and Compliance.
  • Drive alignment through structured planning, clear communication, and consistent delivery rhythms.
  • Provide concise, executive ready updates on progress, risks, and tradeoffs.

Skills & Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in technical program and/or project management within a technology driven organization.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering complex, cross functional initiatives involving cybersecurity, cloud platforms, or enterprise SaaS products.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple high impact initiatives simultaneously while maintaining execution quality and stakeholder trust.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly translate between security, development, technology, and executive audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships across diverse technical teams and use influence to drive execution in environments with competing priorities.
  • Practical understanding of modern cybersecurity concepts, including:
    • Cloud and SaaS security
    • Identity and Access Management (IAM / IDAM)
    • Zero Trust security principles
    • Secure software development lifecycle (SSDLC)
    • Vulnerability management and risk remediation
  • Familiarity working across mixed delivery models, including Agile product and development teams (planning, backlog integration, delivery coordination) and technology teams using more traditional execution approaches.
  • Highly organized, analytical, and action-oriented, with a bias toward delivery and outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience working within or closely alongside a cybersecurity, platform security, or cloud security organization.
  • Experience supporting regulatory compliance and audit programs such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, SOX, or customer security assessments.
  • Familiarity with common security frameworks (e.g., NIST CSF, Zero Trust Architecture) and enterprise risk management concepts.
  • PMP, PgMP, or equivalent program management certification.
  • Experience operating in a SaaS, insurance, or financial services environment.

What Success Looks Like
  • Security initiatives move forward predictably, with clear ownership and visible progress toward meaningful risk reduction.
  • The TPM is trusted across Security, Development, TechOps, Product, and Compliance to remove friction, surface issues early, and keep work moving.
