Job description

Job Title: Technical Accounting Manager

Department: Administration

Reports to: Financial Controller

Location: Greensboro, NC

Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Overview

We are seeking a CPA-qualified Technical Accounting Lead to support financial accuracy, GAAP compliance, and audit readiness across a growing, multi-entity organization. This role serves as the primary owner of complex accounting matters, partnering closely with the Controller and Operational Accounting Manager to ensure the integrity, consistency, and defensibility of reported financial results. The position plays a critical role in strengthening internal controls, interpreting accounting guidance, and aligning financial reporting with both regulatory requirements and operational realities.

As an employee-owned company, we value ownership, accountability, and the impact each role has on our shared success. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and confident working cross-functionally, with the ability to translate technical accounting concepts into practical applications across the business.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Accounting & GAAP

  • Lead evaluation and documentation of accounting treatment for complex or non-routine transactions
  • Research and apply GAAP across revenue recognition, intercompany activity, consolidations, and contract analysis
  • Prepare technical accounting memos and position papers for management and auditors

Close Review & Financial Integrity

  • Review monthly close outputs for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to GAAP, including WIP schedules and revenue recognition
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies, unusual variances, or inconsistencies in financial reporting
  • Establish and maintain accounting policies and standardized practices

Audit & Compliance

  • Serve as primary liaison for external audit requests and internal audit initiatives
  • Ensure audit readiness throughout the year (not just at year-end)
  • Support international filings (VAT, transfer pricing, etc.) in coordination with external advisors

Process & Controls

  • Strengthen internal controls and documentation across accounting processes
  • Partner with Operational Accounting Manager to improve close timelines and quality
  • Develop and maintain SOPs for key accounting functions

Cross-Functional Support

  • Advise leadership on accounting implications of operational and strategic decisions
  • Partner with finance and operations teams to ensure proper data flow into financial reporting

Qualifications

Required

  • CPA required
  • 5โ€“8+ years (public accounting strongly preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and ability to research, interpret, and document technical accounting positions
  • Experience applying ASC 606, including over-time revenue recognition concepts (percentage-of-completion, cost-to-cost input methods, or similar frameworks)
  • Familiarity with project-based or service-oriented business models, including an understanding of concepts such as contract accounting, job costing, and revenue recognition over time
  • Ability to operate independently while also serving as a reviewer, mentor, and cross-functional partner

Preferred

  • Experience in multi-entity environments, including intercompany transactions and consolidations (international exposure a plus)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

What Success Looks Like in This Role

Within the first 6โ€“12 months, this role will:

  • Reduce reliance on the Controller for technical accounting decisions
Complex accounting questions, judgments, and audit-related matters are confidently owned and resolved.
  • Establish audit-ready financials throughout the year
Accounting positions are clearly documented, supportable under GAAP, and proactively maintained, minimizing year-end audit disruption.
  • Improve the quality and consistency of the monthly close
Financial results are accurate, well-supported, and delivered with fewer post-close adjustments or rework.
  • Strengthen accounting policies, controls, and documentation
Key processes are standardized, documented, and consistently applied across entities and transactions.
  • Serve as a trusted partner for complex and non-routine transactions
Business decisions are supported by clear guidance on accounting implications before issues arise.
  • Act as the primary liaison for external auditors and technical accounting matters
Audit requests are handled efficiently, and external stakeholders engage directly with this role on technical topics.

  • May require travel to other office locations around our footprint (on occasion)

Compensation

  • Commensurate with experience.
  • Includes benefit package (medical, 401k, PTO, etc.)
