What is the difference between Tech Manager vs Software Engineer?

AspectTech Manager
Primary RoleOversees technical teams, manages projects, and aligns technology with business goals
Required SkillsLeadership, project management, technical expertise, communication
Work EnvironmentManagement meetings, strategic planning, team coordination
Common CertificationsPMP, Scrum Master, ITIL, technical certifications

While a Tech Manager focuses on leading teams and strategic planning, a Software Engineer primarily develops and maintains software. Both roles require technical skills, but the Tech Manager emphasizes leadership and project oversight, whereas the Software Engineer concentrates on coding and technical problem-solving.

How do Tech Managers typically balance hands-on technical work with people management responsibilities?

Tech Managers often face the challenge of balancing their technical expertise with the demands of leading a team. In most organizations, they spend a portion of their time on code reviews, architectural decisions, and technical problem-solving, while also dedicating significant energy to mentoring, conducting one-on-ones, and facilitating team collaboration. The exact split can vary depending on company size and project phase, but successful Tech Managers prioritize clear communication and delegation to ensure both technical goals and team development are met. This role offers opportunities to influence both technology direction and team culture.

What does a tech manager do?

A tech manager oversees technology teams and projects, ensuring the development and implementation of technical solutions align with organizational goals. They coordinate between departments, manage budgets, and often have technical expertise in areas like software development, network infrastructure, or cybersecurity. Strong leadership, communication skills, and familiarity with project management tools are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Tech Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tech Manager, you need a solid background in software development or IT, leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), cloud platforms, and sometimes certifications such as PMP or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are valuable. Strong communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding Tech Managers apart. These competencies are crucial for effectively leading technical teams, ensuring successful project delivery, and aligning technology initiatives with business goals.

What are Tech Managers?

Tech Managers, also known as Technical Managers, are professionals who oversee technical teams and projects within an organization. They are responsible for planning, coordinating, and leading technology-related activities, ensuring that projects are completed on time and meet organizational standards. Tech Managers bridge the gap between technical staff and upper management by translating business needs into technical solutions. They also mentor team members, manage resources, and help set strategic direction for technology initiatives.

Description

Atlantic Lift Systems, Inc.

Norfolk, Virginia

We are a leading construction equipment rental company serving Virginia and Eastern North Carolina markets. We pride ourselves on our commitment to providing high-quality equipment and exceptional customer service. As a fast-growing company, we value our team members and are dedicated to developing them in a way that allows both them and the company to grow together.

Position Summary

Atlantic Lift is seeking a proactive and solution-oriented IT Manager to oversee all aspects of our information technology infrastructure and systems. Reporting directly to the President, the IT Manager will be responsible for managing IT projects, coordinating help with technical issues, ensuring seamless integration of software systems, and providing strategic guidance on technology solutions.

A central focus of this role will be leading the development and rollout of our new custom ERP system, which we are building in-house using Claude AI for code generation. The IT Manager will own this project end-to-end - defining requirements with stakeholders, coordinating development sprints, overseeing testing, and managing deployment and adoption across the company.

This role requires a strong technical background, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical staff.

Requirements

Responsibilities

New ERP System Development (Claude AI build)

Lead the end-to-end project management of the company's new custom-built ERP system.

Work directly with leadership and department heads to gather requirements and define scope.

Direct AI-assisted development using Claude, reviewing generated code, guiding iterations, and ensuring solutions meet business needs.

Plan and manage development sprints, milestones, testing cycles, and rollout.

Document architecture, configurations, and processes; train end-users and drive adoption.

IT Project Management

Plan, execute, and manage IT projects related to hardware and software implementations, upgrades, and replacements.

Define project scope, timelines, and budgets, ensuring projects are completed efficiently and effectively.

Technical Problem Solving

Diagnose and resolve technical issues related to hardware, software, network infrastructure, and operating systems.

Provide timely and effective technical support to end-users.

ERP System Management and Integration

Serve as the primary point of contact for ERP-related systems and providers.

Integrate the ERP with other business systems and applications.

Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related to ERP systems in collaboration with providers and end-users.

Understand user needs and implement necessary configurations and customizations.

IT Support Sourcing and Management

Identify and evaluate potential external IT support vendors and services.

Manage relationships with external IT support providers to ensure timely and effective support when needed.

Device Management

Oversee the procurement, deployment, maintenance, and security of all company IT devices, including computers, laptops, mobile devices, and printers.

Implement and enforce device management policies and procedures.

Technical Communication

Effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Translate complex IT concepts into clear and understandable language for end-users and management.

Technical Proficiency

Possess a strong understanding of IT hardware, software, networking principles, and cybersecurity best practices.

Ability to understand and contribute to scripting or coding for integration and automation purposes is highly valued.

Strategic IT Planning

Stay informed about emerging technologies and trends relevant to the construction equipment rental industry.

Contribute to the development of the company's IT strategy and roadmap.

Maintain accurate documentation of IT systems, configurations, and procedures.

Security

Implement and maintain security measures to protect company data and systems from unauthorized access and cyber threats.

Other IT Duties

Undertake any other duties and responsibilities typically associated with an IT Manager role within a growing organization.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in an IT management or similar role.

Proven experience managing IT projects from inception to completion.

Strong technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Experience working with and integrating ERP systems.

Experience managing relationships with external IT vendors.

Solid understanding of network infrastructure, hardware, software, and operating systems.

Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
