Americo is hiring a full-time Associate General Counsel to join our team!

The hours for this position are Monday Friday, 8:00 AM 5:00 PM, on site at our downtown Kansas City, MO office location.

Overview:

The Legal department is responsible for supporting corporate governance, regulatory compliance, enterprise legal strategy, and risk management across the organization.

The Associate General Counsel serves as a key enterprise legal advisor, shaping legal strategy, advising executive leadership, and guiding the organization through complex regulatory, contractual, and risk-related matters. This role partners closely with senior leaders across the business to balance legal risk with strategic objectives while ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise executive leadership on legal risk, strategy, and the impact of legal considerations on business decisions.
  • Interpret and apply complex state and federal insurance regulations and legal frameworks.
  • Structure, draft, and negotiate high-impact agreements, including distribution, reinsurance, vendor, and strategic partnership contracts.
  • Lead legal strategy for disputes, regulatory examinations, investigations, and enforcement matters.
  • Coordinate and oversee outside counsel across enterprise litigation and regulatory matters to ensure alignment with strategy and risk posture.
  • Review and approve outside counsel invoices for accuracy, reasonableness, and alignment with agreed scope and outcomes.
  • Define governance standards, legal frameworks, and review processes across the organization.
  • Influence cross-functional policies, controls, and operating practices.
  • Mentor attorneys and contribute to the development of legal talent across the organization.
  • Translate business and industry insights into enterprise-level legal strategy and guidance for executive stakeholders.
  • Define and enhance enterprise legal processes, frameworks, and operating models to support scalability and consistency.
  • Anticipate emerging industry, regulatory, and legal trends and advise leadership on risks, opportunities, and strategic responses.
  • Oversee governance frameworks, policies, and risk controls.
  • Partner with executive leadership on strategic business initiatives.
  • Balance legal risk with desired business outcomes.

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree and active license to practice law required.
  • 1012 years of broad legal experience, including a combination of in-house, law firm, regulatory, litigation, or insurance industry experience.
  • Deep expertise in legal risk assessment, regulatory interpretation, governance, contracts, and enterprise legal advisory.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise executive stakeholders.
  • Experience managing outside counsel, including strategy, deliverables, and invoice review.
  • Strong executive presence with excellent communication, judgment, discretion, and strategic thinking skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience within the insurance industry or a highly regulated environment.
  • Background supporting enterprise-level legal strategy or executive leadership teams.
