Job description

The Team:

The Hermes Maison Madison Flagship Boutique opened in 1983 and focuses on providing extraordinary service to clients as a part of the New York Region. This position will report to the Alterations Manager and will work collaboratively with the sales team and selling support teams to support the client experience in a fast-paced, luxury environment.

The Opportunity:

As the Tailor, you are responsible for delivering an exceptional client experience by ensuring every garment reflects impeccable fit, craftsmanship, and the Hermes' highest standards of quality. You are responsible for performing precise alterations, executing refined handfinishing techniques, and supporting the boutique team through expert guidance during fittings and client consultations.

You are also responsible in supporting the selling process by greeting and engaging with clients, conducting fittings, and addressing all special requests or immediate alteration needs. You will partner closely with the MadetoMeasure Client Development Manager on all MTM and Bespoke orders, providing consistent followup and communication on project status.

All other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

About the Role: 

  • Conduct personalized fittings with clients, offering expert recommendations that honor the garment's design while enhancing comfort, movement, and silhouette.

  • Collaborate closely with Sales Specialist and Store Management to support the selling ceremony and overall client experience.

  • Communicate clearly on alteration timelines, garment readiness, and care instructions to ensure a seamless and elevated client experience.

  • Provide onthespot evaluations or immediate tailoring needs when necessary to support client satisfaction.

  • Understand style and fit of various garments. Maintain an up-to-date product knowledge of Hermes Women's and Men's collections seasonally.

  • Demonstrate strong proficiency in operating tailor shop equipment including but not limited to industrial sewing/ straight stitch machine, blind hemmer/serger machine, button machine, cutting table, and pressing/steaming equipment.

  • Advise clients (internal and external) on product alterations, providing accurately calculating lead times and cost to ensure expectations are managed.

  • Maintain an excellent level of customer service at all times within the store. Foster client relationships to increase brand loyalty and repeat business.

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of client needs.

  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the luxury retail market and competitors.

  • Press all altered clothing. Be aware of pressing techniques for various weights of fabric.

  • Assist in teaching store personnel basic pressing techniques.

  • Perform a full range of alterations, including hemming, tapering, resizing, shortening, lengthening, and reconstruction of complex garments.

  • Execute delicate hand-stitching and machine-sewing techniques on luxury fabrics, including silk, wool, cashmere, leather, and specialty textiles.

  • Ensure all garments maintain original construction details, proportion, and finishing.

  • Conduct quality checks before and after alterations to guarantee impeccable results.

  • Travel domestically and to Paris as needed to participate in trunk shows and special events, as well as MTM and Bespoke training as scheduled.

About You: 

  • 8+ years of professional tailoring or alterations experience in luxury fashion, or high-end readytowear.
  • Exude the spirit of Hermes through sound tailoring skills, knowledge, and experience.
  • Exhibit a professional understanding of garment fitting, knowledge of fabrics, styling, and manufacturing techniques.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of garment construction and men's suiting techniques in luxury.
  • Strong knowledge of different fabrications and materials.
  • A high level of applied tailoring skills.
  • Must possess superior communication skills in order to effectively communicate with clients, management and employees in the boutique.
  • Must be able to effectively organize and track product and client information.
  • Experience with computer systems and Microsoft platforms
  • Ability to lift between 0-25 lbs. without assistance.

The range for this position is $79,123.00 - $96,706.00.  Actual rates are determined based on the job, location, and individual experience.
