Summary/Objective:

The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and managing the organization's engineering team and projects to support a diverse group of windshield, window, and door systems for the off-highway markets including powersports, construction equipment and other specialty vehicles.  This includes such products as: powered and manual windshield systems, mechanically actuated specialty vehicle windows, window frames and window systems, door systems, cargo management systems, and seating frames. This individual must be an innovation-focused, forward thinker who can lead product development from concept stage to production.  They should be able to lead their team to accomplish challenging goals by effective leadership strategies.  This leader must be passionate, hardworking and have a sense of urgency.

In addition to new product development, the Engineering Manager will support existing production products through VA/VE and Continuous Improvement efforts.  They will also work closely with internal cross-functional teams as well as external customers and suppliers.  Lastly, they will help support and implement corporate engineering initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Lead, mentor and grow a team of designers and engineers; evaluate and address training needs of personnel.
  2. Practice and teach others in the application of product development methods, engineering tools, and related industry standards.
  3. Collaborate with product managers to understand product needs/issues and manage engineering resources to facilitate execution and completion.
  4. Translate business objectives into design objectives and initiatives.  Be aware and informed of engineering team member’s projects and priorities. Set project priorities to align with business objectives. 
  5. Review quality and warranty information and ensure products and processes are improved in a systematic and permanent manner.
  6. Review testing and R&D efforts to ensure that component level development is reflective of system level performance.
  7. Create conceptual and prototype designs, images, and physical samples
  8. Work with manufacturing engineering and suppliers to ensure the most efficient methods of manufacturing and assembly are developed and meet appropriate specifications.
  9. Track and communicate design changes to a cross-functional team
  10. Provide technical details for engineering documents including test reports, product specifications, manuals, etc.
  11. Ensure all products meet applicable product safety standards
  12. Support manufacturing/assembly areas through first runs of products
  13. Evaluate field installations/use and translate that information into technical design goals and improvements
  14. Lead establishment and/or upgrading of internal engineering standards and practices
  15. Help evolve the company’s design philosophy and processes, leading technical tasks such as Risk Analysis, FMEA, PFMEA, product specification, etc. as well as driving implementation of robust project management.
  16. Present concepts in various stages of completion to groups large and small.
  17. Ensure team members understand and abide by LCI's safety and personnel policies

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily indoors in an office environment.
  • May sit for several hours at a time
  • May experience periods of prolonged exposure to computer screens.
  • May require use of hands to operate computers, printers, and copiers.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in engineering (or similar)
  2. 8+ years of relevant work experience with 5+ years of experience leading/managing a team of designers and engineers
  3. Excellent communication skills
  4. Experience in business/Industry.
  5. Self-motivated and possesses a high level of personal initiative.
  6. Passionate about leading people well

Competencies:

  1. Leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring skills with the ability to provide firm but direct communication on performance and expectations.
  2. Strong business acumen; understands the many dimensions of a growing company, their importance, and product design’s relationships within each.
  3. Solid mechanical engineering experience; can design and oversee and provide technical guidance in engineering components and mechanical/electromechanical systems.
  4. Understanding of materials, mechanical properties and manufacturing processes such that initial concept designs are feasible and meet agreed upon design requirements
  5. Analysis of highly complex engineering issues and problems, drawing valid conclusions based on robust data collection and fact-based review.
  6. Strong problem-solving skills with a high level of creativity
  7. Ability to evaluate and address training needs of personnel.
  8. Strong working knowledge of drawing detailing and GD&T practices
  9. Capable of performing high level tolerance stack-ups
  10. Use of D/PFMEA and other risk analysis tools

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has the following positions reporting to it:

Engineers, CAD Designers, Project Management and Bill of Materials managers.

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position, and the expected work hours are a minimum of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday; weekend and overnight work could also become necessary.

Travel:

Local and/or minimal out of state travel is expected for this position.
