What is From Home Human Systems Engineering?

From Home Human Systems Engineering refers to the application of human systems engineering principles while working remotely. Human Systems Engineering focuses on optimizing the interactions between people, technology, and environments to improve performance and well-being. When done from home, professionals in this field use digital tools and virtual collaboration to analyze, design, and enhance systems for remote teams or organizations. This role often involves ergonomics, user experience, workflow optimization, and change management tailored to remote settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Work-from-Home Human Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Work-from-Home Human Systems Engineer, you typically need a background in human factors, systems engineering, or a related field, alongside strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with tools such as human reliability analysis software, usability testing platforms, and proficiency in systems modeling (e.g., UML, SysML) is often required. Outstanding communication, collaboration, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for remote work and effective cross-functional teamwork. These competencies ensure that engineered systems are user-friendly, efficient, and safe while supporting seamless coordination in a virtual work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Human Systems Engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Human Systems Engineers often encounter challenges such as collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams, maintaining clear communication, and ensuring user feedback is accurately captured without in-person observation. To address these issues, professionals utilize collaborative digital tools, establish regular virtual meetings, and rely on remote usability testing platforms to gather data. Staying proactive in communication and leveraging technology for user research can help maintain the quality of human-centered design while working from home.

Job description

Overview
Working across the globe, V2X builds smart solutions designed to integrate physical and digital infrastructure from base to battlefield. We bring 120 years of successful mission support to improve security, streamline logistics, and enhance readiness. Aligned around a shared purpose, our $3.9B company and 16,000 people work alongside our
clients, here and abroad, to tackle their most complex challenges with integrity, respect, responsibility, and professionalism.
We are looking for a Systems Engineering Section Manager who is passionate about leading a team of systems engineers that are committed to making our customers' missions successful. As a Section Manager, you will lead a Systems Engineering team and oversee them throughout the entire engineering lifecycle. The team works in both waterfall and agile frameworks in the development of products across multiple domains and multiple technologies. This team also supports a mix of quick reaction development programs, V2X technical investment programs, and longer development programs that last multiple years. The Systems Engineering Section Manager is responsible for the performance and development of the engineers in the section. This includes defining and managing necessary skill competency models and gap closure plans. The Section Manager will also have direct engagement on teams, leading and driving success on multiple programs.
Responsibilities
  • Lead a cross-functional team of 15-20 systems engineers in Indianapolis, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Oversee workforce planning and recruiting efforts to align talent with evolving program demands and business objectives.
  • Champion systems engineering excellence in both waterfall and agile environments, guiding teams through SRR, PDR, CDR, and TRR reviews.
  • Collaborate with Chief Engineers, Chief Technologists, and discipline managers to craft winning proposals, deliver high-value solutions, and exceed customer commitments.
  • Cultivate customer relationships, identify growth opportunities, lead white paper development, and support proposals to drive on-contract expansions.
  • Own the section strategy: set priorities, track key metrics, and deliver concise weekly and monthly engineering highlights to senior leadership.
  • Mentor engineers across the organization, share best practices, and drive continous improvement.

Drive innovation. Lead a talented team. Shape mission-critical solutions across land, air, and sea platforms.
Qualifications
Required Skills:
  • 15+ years of systems, software, or hardware engineering experience with deep understanding of the full Systems Engineering lifecycle and processes
  • Demonstrated success in designing, integrating, and testing complex, mission-critical systems across land, air, and sea domains
  • Proven ability to author and manage requirements, drive hardware/software integration, and execute rigorous verification activities
  • Hands-on expertise in test planning, procedure development, execution, and analysis to ensure mission readiness
  • Track record guiding multi-discipline engineering teams with clear technical vision, mentorship, and performance feedback
  • Experience steering programs through acquisition, proposal development, and execution phases of the system lifecycle
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for engaging internal teams, external stakeholders, and senior leaders
  • Self-driven and accountable: consistently delivers high-quality work on schedule and autonomously solves complex challenges
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain an Active DoD Secret Clearance.

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related STEM discipline.
