How to become a systems analyst?
Those interested in a career as a system analyst need an education in computer science一at least a bachelor’s degree, although a master’s degree is becoming a common requirement. Even more important is the technical knowledge of enterprise solutions, project management, and data management. As a systems analyst, you are more than an IT technician. You are also in charge of the entire workflow of the department, so management experience is a must. On-the-job training in lower level roles is important in this career. Private companies, government organizations, and health care services often hire system analysts.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a systems analyst, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Systems Analyst vs Software Developer?
| Aspect | Systems Analyst | Software Developer |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Role | Analyzes business needs and designs IT solutions | Creates, codes, and tests software applications |
| Required Skills | Business analysis, systems design, communication | Programming, software engineering, coding |
| Work Environment | Collaborates with stakeholders and IT teams | Focuses on coding and software development |
| Common Certifications | CBAP, CCBA, ITIL | Microsoft, Oracle, Java certifications |
While both roles work within the IT industry, Systems Analysts focus on understanding business needs and designing solutions, whereas Software Developers primarily build and implement software applications. Both roles often collaborate but serve different functions in the technology development process.
How do systems analysts typically collaborate with other IT and business teams during a project lifecycle?

Job description
From the beginning, Starbucks set out to be a different kind of company. One that not only celebrated coffee and the rich tradition, but that also brought a feeling of connection. We are known for developing extraordinary leaders who share this passion and are guided by their service to others.
As a Systems Analyst, you'll deliver and sustain technology and process solutions that enable strategic initiatives and operational improvements. You'll partner across IT and the business to define requirements, design user-centric solutions, configure and test systems, and support critical production environments-driving alignment and continuous improvement along the way.
As a Systems Analyst, you will...
- Lead solution design and delivery - define scope and solution options, direct requirements and user stories, partner with project teams on estimates/timelines, and apply Agile/Scrum and Lean techniques to improve processes and outcomes.
- Configure and validate solutions - perform (or direct) application configuration (attributes, workflows, UI changes), support data conversion (extract, load, validation), and build/execute test plans while validating results (including complex queries and operational reporting as needed).
- Own production support and stability - provide (or direct) 24x7 support for critical systems, lead root-cause analysis and trend insights, coordinate cross-team/vendor resolution, and maintain documentation and training for users and support partners.
We'd love to hear from people with:
- 7-10+ years of relevant experience in systems analysis, solution design, and IT operations
- Deep understanding of global HR processes, including Position Management, Time Management, and global localization
- Analyzing, configuring, implementing, and supporting HCM ERP/SaaS systems like Success Factors
- Working knowledge of SDLC, Agile/Scrum, and service-oriented architecture (SOA) concepts
- 5+ years of relevant experience, including leading complex initiatives and multiple tracks of work in Success Factors or SAP HCM
Preferred qualifications
- Executive presence with strong stakeholder management, communication, and team leadership skills to guide clients and internal delivery team
- Experience driving process re-engineering/Lean improvements and user-centric design practices
- Experience leading data conversion and advanced query/reporting for operational insights, knowledge of ABAP is preferred
- Demonstrated success coaching/mentoring analysts and influencing alignment across diverse stakeholder groups
- Certification in SAP Success Factors modules like EC, ECP, Compensation, Onboarding and Recruiting is preferred
- Experience/exposure to SAP CPI and SAP BTP
- Proven expertise in Employee Central (configuration, workflows, business rules, data models, and permissions)

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity.
