Job description

Project Cost Accountant

Location: Channelview, TX

Employment Type: Full-Time, In-Person


Position Overview:

The Project Cost Accountant is a vital part of Gemma’s Finance team, and reports to the Accounting Manager. The ideal candidate must be highly organized, self-driven and committed to delivering a high-quality work product under regimented time constraints. The Project Cost Accountant should be focused on expansion of knowledge of our systems, processes, and guidelines and should strive for self-improvement.


Location:

This position is based out of Gemma’s Project Site Office in Channelview, Texas and may involve occasional travel to project sites and to Gemma’s home office in Glastonbury, Connecticut.


Primary Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Own and maintain the detailed Project Cost Analysis Report (“PCAR”) and supporting schedules for the company’s major construction projects.
  • Lead and coordinate the monthly project forecasting process, including distributing forecast worksheets, tracking completion, validating updates, and consolidating results.
  • Partner with Project Managers and Project Executives to analyze contract value, actual costs, remaining commitments, uncommitted forecasted costs, contingency, and projected final project results.
  • Lead or coordinate monthly PCAR review meetings with project leadership and Finance.
  • Analyze forecast assumptions, cost-code trends, budget variances, commitments, procurement status, and potential project risks and opportunities.
  • Evaluate and follow up on incomplete or unsupported forecasts and work with project teams to develop accurate estimates to complete.
  • Maintain the integrity and consistency of project cost data across the project-management system, accounting system, PCAR, and other schedules.
  • Identify emerging cost overruns, margin changes, missing commitments, and forecast inconsistencies and communicate them promptly to management.
  • Develop and improve project forecasting tools, reporting standards, controls, and documented procedures.
  • Support monthly and quarterly accounting requirements, including project-related journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, project reporting, and audit workpapers.

Qualifications:

A successful candidate will demonstrate strong ownership, initiative, professional judgement, and a willingness to independently investigate and resolve issues. This individual must be comfortable working across Finance and project operation and following matters through timely completion.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of relevant experience in construction project accounting, project cost controls, EPC project finance, or another long-term project-based environment.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications, particularly Microsoft Excel. Experience with Sage 300 preferred. Microsoft Power BI is also a plus.
  • Experience partnering with Project Mangers, Project Executives, operational leaders, and other non-finance stakeholders.
  • CPA designation or public accounting experience is a plus but is not required.
  • Highly motivated and self-directed, with initiative, accountability, and a sense of urgency.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to identify discrepancies, evaluate, assumptions, and independently investigate and resolve issues.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple deliverables under established deadlines.
  • High level of attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to work productively both independently and when collaborating with others.
