Job description

The Principal Program Manager - Environment/Sustainability will be instrumental in defining and executing the site's environmental stewardship and sustainability initiatives.
This position is responsible for driving comprehensive decarbonization efforts across all Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. A key part of the role involves safeguarding critical natural resources-specifically biodiversity, water resources, and air quality-through the execution of rigorous, data-driven interventions. Additionally, the position has a key reporting responsibility to the enterprise to ensure compliance with environmental and sustainability reporting regulations.
The successful candidate will be a highly specialized and experienced professional in implementing sustainability initiatives, with a strong preference for experience within a biologics manufacturing setting.
Key to this position is the capacity for developing innovative solutions to complex challenges and leading effective problem-solving efforts. This individual works independently within established guidelines and policies and serves as a resource for best practices and quality standards. They actively lead site- wide sub-streams and participate in global/large cross-functional project teams, applying critical thinking, tools, and sound judgment to identify innovative solutions for the organization.
The Opportunity
  • Strategy Execution & Delivery: In partnership with GRP SHE, drive the execution and maintenance of a multi- year sustainability roadmap that aligns with global standards and corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. This includes coordinating the assessment of material topics, managing progress toward ambitious targets (e.g., science-based targets for carbon reduction), and preparing business cases to secure executive approval for key initiatives.
  • Program Execution & Scalability: Monitor cross-functional project execution and leverage data analytics/dashboards for performance tracking and reporting. Establish KPIs, build dashboards, and leverage data analytics for performance tracking and reporting.
  • Compliance and Regulatory: Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, standards, and guidelines. Monitor and keep up to date with global regulatory trends (e.g. CSRD/ESRS). Ability to prepare reports and speak confidently to regulatory bodies.
  • Program Management and Policy Development: Oversee site programs affiliated with sustainability strategy. Developing policies and procedures to ensure continuous improvement in relevant areas of focus.
  • Leadership Support: Serve as a programmatic advisor to the Site Leadership Team (SLT)and build a culture of sustainability across the entire site workforce.
  • Coach and/or mentor: Coach and mentor EHS staff, facilitating connections between various programs within the function.
  • Other Duties As Assigned.

Who You Are
Education:
  • You hold a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited 4-year college or university with a major in physical science, life science, engineering, occupational safety, or other relevant scientific field.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 8 or more years of relevant work experience. Previous experience in manufacturing and/or the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry strongly preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies:
  • An enabler to success is a demonstrated working knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations, codes, and consensus standards, along with hands-on experience in assessments and the development of strategic solutions..
  • A thorough understanding of environment, health, and safety regulations applicable to GMP and non-GMP environments is critical.
  • The candidate must be a highly effective team player and collaborator, capable of reframing challenges into opportunities, navigating organizational resistance, and championing Roche sustainability initiatives.
  • Must possess the ability to balance risk with speed and value, focusing on key areas to resolve issues and drive improvement, and right-sizing programs for compliance and efficiency. A strategic and forward-thinking mindset is essential to anticipate future organizational needs and deliver high value through strategic consulting, informed by deep listening to stakeholders, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Strong communication skills are paramount, with the ability to develop clear messages from complex data, present effectively to senior leadership, and build trust quickly. They must be able to translate data into actionable insights and communicate in a way that inspires engagement. Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills are necessary to lead and motivate cross-functional teams in a fast-paced and diverse environment, employing positive interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach, potentially including leading agile teams.
  • Must be able to significantly influence organizational objectives and long-range goals, work with limited direction, make independent decisions, and utilize innovative approaches to drive change.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to walk, stand, and climb in industrial environments for extended periods.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, and safety shoes.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $120,400-$223,600. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
