What is a surety account?

A Surety Account refers to an account or relationship managed by a surety professional, often within an insurance or bonding company, that involves providing surety bonds to clients. Surety bonds are financial guarantees that ensure one party will fulfill their obligations to another, commonly used in construction, government contracts, and court proceedings. Surety Account professionals are responsible for assessing risk, underwriting bonds, and managing client relationships to ensure contractual obligations are met. They also provide guidance on compliance and help clients navigate the bonding process. This role requires strong analytical, communication, and customer service skills.

What are some common challenges faced by surety account professionals when managing client portfolios?

Surety Account professionals often encounter challenges such as balancing the diverse needs of clients while maintaining strict underwriting guidelines set by surety companies. They must stay up-to-date with changing regulations and market conditions, which can impact risk assessments and client recommendations. Additionally, managing deadlines for bond renewals and coordinating with underwriters, clients, and legal teams requires strong organizational and communication skills. Successfully navigating these challenges helps ensure client satisfaction and compliance with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a surety account manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surety Account Manager, you need a solid understanding of surety bonds, risk assessment, and client relationship management, often backed by a degree in business, finance, or insurance. Familiarity with industry software (such as bond management systems) and knowledge of regulatory requirements or relevant certifications (like AFSB) are typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail help you build trust with clients and ensure accurate processing. These skills are crucial for managing client portfolios effectively and maintaining business growth while minimizing risk.

Job description

Are you a surety professional who thrives at the intersection of client service, underwriting strategy, and operational execution? Join a high-performing team and take on a meaningful role managing and delivering surety bond solutions for many clients.

This hybrid position requires working 3 days a week from the New York office.

Aon is in the business of better decisions

At Aon, we build decisions for the better to protect and enrich the lives of people around the world.

As an organization, we are united through trust as one engaged team and we are passionate about helping our colleagues and clients succeed.

What the day will look like

You'll work closely with clients, surety carriers, and internal collaborators to deliver bond programs with accuracy, compliance, and outstanding service. This role involves significant client interaction and ownership of key accounts. It offers the chance to create an immediate impact while further developing your expertise in the specialized field of surety.

  • Works under minimal supervision, exercising good judgment in routine and moderately complex client and market situations.
  • Takes primary accountability in managing selected accounts.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of surety bonds, including bond program structures, indemnity concepts, and market practices including accurate client interaction and advisement.
  • May assist in onboarding, mentoring, and training internal team.
  • Works closely with carriers every day to address evolving needs. Prepares and processes various surety instruments, such as bid, final, miscellaneous, and court bonds. Ensures these align with underwriting guidelines and client expectations.
  • Collaborates with clients daily to meet their changing requirements. Implements Consents of Surety, Prequalification Letters, Riders, and other obligations required by clients in line with State rules. Determines the necessary documents to complete issuance, including power-of-attorney, resident license, and others, ensuring attention to contractual, legal, and financial details.
  • Prepares General Indemnity Agreements and bond applications. Coordinates with and advises clients to acquire complete, accurate financial and corporate information for underwriting review. This includes any other nuanced client needs or requirements.
  • Maintains and supports data accuracy and promotes proactive oversight of bond programs in AonBondLink (ABL).
  • Works closely with internal collaborators to implement and ensure accurate, complete electronic bond files in AonBondLink (ABL). Also confirms and manages related client financial and underwriting records while following internal controls and audit requirements to prevent E&O.
  • Manages countersignature requirements and related jurisdictional nuances to support compliant bond issuance across multiple states and territories.
  • Provides technical surety mentorship and support to non-surety colleagues, helping interpret bond forms, indemnity requirements, and program structures for internal collaborators.
  • Coordinates receipt and organization of pertinent client related underwriting information (e.g., financial statements, work-in-progress schedules, bank information, organizational documents) to support timely carrier decisions.
  • Verifies that all bonds are issued within established surety lines of credit and brokerage authority. Assists in structuring and negotiating approvals for bond requests exceeding standard limits or outside delegated authority.

How this opportunity is different

Unlike many surety operations roles focused mainly on transaction processing, this position combines technical surety expertise with client advisory duties and meaningful market involvement. You will work directly with complex bonding programs, underwriting negotiations, and carrier relationships while acting as a trusted resource for clients and internal colleagues. The role also allows for broader influence through mentoring, participation in process improvement, and responsibility for critical compliance and underwriting workflows. For professionals wanting to move beyond administrative bond issuance and act as a strategic partner in the surety process, this is an outstanding chance to increase visibility, expand impact, and grow within a leading organization.

Skills and experience that will lead to success

  • Is able to effectively interpret a variety of technical instructions involving abstract and concrete variables and apply them to client and bond-specific scenarios.
  • Shows excellent organizational, time-management, and multi-tasking abilities, successfully managing various client and market requirements.
  • Retains Notary Public certification.
  • Maintains Power of Attorney appointments with major surety markets and exercises such authority responsibly and in accordance with internal controls.
  • Is proficient in all required technology platforms, including AonBondLink, Bridge, and Outlook. Uses them to facilitate deliverables for clients and with markets around exposures, new bond needs, changes, expirations, or similar.

Education and licensing requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is preferred for this position. Maintain Notary Public designation and hold the appropriate Producer license.
