How much do student nurse assistant jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for student nurse assistant in the United States is $16.57, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.66 and $18.51 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How to make an extra $2000 a month as a nurse?

A student nurse assistant can increase income by taking on additional shifts, working overtime, or securing part-time roles in healthcare facilities. Developing specialized skills or certifications, such as CPR or EKG, can also qualify for higher-paying assignments or private caregiving opportunities.

What are student nurse assistants?

Student nurse assistants are individuals who are currently enrolled in a nursing program and work under the supervision of registered nurses or other healthcare professionals. Their role is to provide basic patient care, such as assisting with activities of daily living, taking vital signs, and helping with patient mobility. This position allows nursing students to gain hands-on experience in clinical settings, develop essential skills, and apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations. Working as a student nurse assistant can also help students build confidence and prepare for their future roles as licensed nurses.

What nursing jobs are best for students?

Student nurse assistants, such as nursing aides or patient care assistants, are common roles for students pursuing nursing careers. These positions typically involve basic patient care tasks and may require certification or training, providing valuable hands-on experience in healthcare settings. Other related roles include medical scribe or healthcare intern, which can help build relevant skills and understanding of clinical environments.

What is the difference between Student Nurse Assistant vs Certified Nursing Assistant?

AspectStudent Nurse AssistantCertified Nursing Assistant
Required CredentialsEnrolled in nursing program, no certification neededCertified through state exam, CPR certification often required
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, clinical rotationsLong-term care facilities, hospitals, home health
Employer & Industry UsageEducational institutions, healthcare facilities during trainingHealthcare providers, nursing homes, hospitals
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for training and experience purposesStandard healthcare support role

The main difference between a Student Nurse Assistant and a Certified Nursing Assistant is that the Student Nurse Assistant is typically a nursing student gaining practical experience during their education, while the Certified Nursing Assistant has completed certification requirements and is fully qualified to provide patient care independently. Both roles are vital in healthcare settings, but the Student Nurse Assistant is usually in training, whereas the CNA is a certified professional.

What do student nurse assistants do?

Student nurse assistants support healthcare teams by helping with patient care tasks such as bathing, feeding, and mobility under supervision. They also assist with basic clinical duties, maintain patient comfort, and learn clinical skills in a healthcare setting, often while working towards certification or training requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Student Nurse Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Student Nurse Assistant, you need basic knowledge of patient care, strong observational skills, and enrollment in a nursing program or completion of a nurse assistant training course. Familiarity with electronic health records, medical terminology, and standard healthcare protocols is often required. Compassion, teamwork, and strong communication skills help you support patients and collaborate effectively with healthcare staff. These abilities ensure safe, high-quality care and smooth operations in clinical environments.

Can a student nurse be a CNA?

A student nurse can work as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) if they meet the state's certification requirements, which often include completing a state-approved training program and passing a competency exam. However, being a student nurse does not automatically qualify someone to be a CNA; additional certification is typically required. Some programs may allow students to gain CNA experience as part of their training, but they must still obtain the proper certification to work independently as a CNA.

What are some common challenges faced by Student Nurse Assistants during clinical rotations, and how can they be managed?

Student Nurse Assistants often encounter challenges such as balancing coursework with hands-on clinical duties, adapting to fast-paced healthcare environments, and effectively communicating with patients and healthcare teams. To manage these challenges, it's important to develop strong time-management skills, seek guidance from supervisors or mentors, and actively participate in team discussions. Building confidence through asking questions and practicing new skills can also help Student Nurse Assistants overcome initial uncertainties and succeed in their roles.
