Job description

The scope of the Student Nurse Extern position encompasses a continuum of โ€œnursingโ€ care for adult with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Student Nurse Extern will function under the continuous guidance, supervision, assistance and support from both Registered Nurses and Licensed Practice Nurses. Student Nurse Externs will utilize the nursing process to guide the provision of novice level developmental disabilities nursing care for selected residents in all three (3) skill domains: [1] Clinical/Technical Skills, [2] Critical Thinking Skills, and [3] Interpersonal and Communication Skills.

The nursing process encompasses significant actions taken by all nurses [RNs, LPNs] in the provision of care for special needs residents and forms the foundation of clinical decision making and nursing actions at The Communities of Don Guanella and Divine Providence. โ€œStandards of Careโ€ delineate care activities provided to all recipients of nursing care and services. The Standards of Care are categorized into six (6) components which reflect the six linear, cyclical steps of the โ€œnursing processโ€-i.e. nursing assessment, nursing diagnosis/problem or need identification, outcome identification, planning of nursing care, implementation of nursing plan of care, and the evaluation of resident responses/outcomes to selected aspects of nursing care.

Student Nurse Extern Position Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Must be an active student who is in their last year, or going into their last year of an accredited school of nursing.
  • With guidance, support, assistance and under the direct supervision of an R.N., demonstrate the competencies needed to insure the provision of safe pediatric developmental disabilities nursing care for selected residents.
