CLASSIFICATION TITLE:  Assistant Librarian

TIMEBASE/POSITION TYPE:  Temporary, Part-time

APPROXIMATE STARTING DATE:   Spring 2026

DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:  The Cal Poly Maritime Academy Library invites applications for a pool of part-time librarians as needed. Responsibilities may include any combination of the following:

  • Supporting library instruction and teaching library workshops.
  • Providing reference services through varied modalities - in person, email, chat, and Zoom
  • Representing the library at campus-wide outreach events
  • Creating and updating online resources, including webpages, guides, and tutorials

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Librarian.
  • Appointments from the part-time pool are temporary, so applicants must be available on very short notice.

ABOUT CAL POLY MARITIME ACADEMY: Located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), Cal Poly Maritime Academy is a unique and specialized campus of the 23-campus system. Serving a population of approximately 1000 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, we are one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States - and the only one on the West Coast. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a non-tenure-track position in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent institution by the time of appointment.
  • Experience providing reference, instruction, or outreach services to a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collegially in a team setting.
  • Demonstrated competency working with computer applications and the ability to learn new software applications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to interact sensitively and effectively in a multi-cultural environment. 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Three or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in or potential for developing and leading engaging library-related instruction sessions.
  • Experience in promoting library-related programs.
  • Experience working in an academic library.

SALARY COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with the education, qualifications, and experience of the individual.  The full-time classification salary range for the position is: 

  • CSU Range: Assistant Librarian: $6,288 - $7,658
  • Anticipated pro-rated monthly hiring range based on hours (10-20 per week) and experience: $1,572-$3,144.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: 

  • The typical classroom and office environment is in a two-story building with elevator access.

  • Applicants must provide proof of US citizenship or authorization to work in the United States within three days from the date of hire.
  • A background check investigation (including a criminal records check) is required prior to employment. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of a current CSU employees who was conditionally offered the position.
