Their work often involves high-level problem-solving, data analysis, and collaboration with company leadership to make informed decisions. Clients include businesses, governments, and non-profits seeking guidance on complex strategic issues.

Strategy Consultants focus on high-level strategic planning, market analysis, and long-term growth strategies for organizations. Business Analysts typically analyze data, improve processes, and support decision-making within a company. While both roles require analytical skills and business knowledge, Strategy Consulting involves broader strategic thinking and client-facing work, whereas Business Analysts focus on operational details and internal projects.

What are the most common challenges faced by strategy consultants when working with diverse client organizations?

Strategy consultants frequently encounter the challenge of adapting their recommendations to fit the unique culture, goals, and constraints of each client organization. Navigating complex stakeholder dynamics, managing expectations, and ensuring alignment between proposed strategies and organizational realities are all critical aspects of the role. Consultants must be skilled at building trust quickly, facilitating productive workshops, and communicating insights in a way that resonates with both executive leaders and operational teams. Successfully overcoming these challenges requires strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a keen understanding of industry trends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Strategy Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Strategy Consultant, you need strong analytical abilities, business acumen, and typically a degree in business, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools like Excel, PowerPoint, and sometimes advanced analytics platforms, along with relevant certifications such as MBA or PMP, is valuable. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help consultants build trust and deliver actionable insights to clients. These skills ensure consultants can develop effective strategies, foster client relationships, and drive impactful business outcomes.

Senior Consultant – Job Description

Overview

Grant Thornton Stax is a strategy consulting firm built for high-impact work with private equity and growth-focused clients. Following our acquisition by Grant Thornton Advisors LLC, we’re expanding rapidly, combining the agility and culture of a boutique with the scale, reach, and platform of Grant Thornton.

Recognized as a top workplace, Grant Thornton Stax has been named to the 2025 Vault Consulting 50 Best Firms, Management Consulted’s Top Ranked Consulting Firms 2025, and Consulting Magazine’s 2025 Best Firms to Work For.

To support our continued growth, we’re expanding our team of Senior Consultants—professionals who combine strong analytical capabilities with increasing ownership and leadership on client engagements.

The Work

As a Senior Consultant, you will play a central role on fast-paced, high-impact engagements for private equity firms and PE-backed portfolio companies.

You’ll work across sectors including software/technology, healthcare, business services, consumer, industrials, education, and the events ecosystem. Our teams operate with high ownership, direct client exposure, and meaningful responsibility—without the heavy travel model common in consulting.

What You’ll Do

Senior Consultants at Grant Thornton Stax operate at the intersection of analysis, insight development, and team leadership. You will:

  • Lead workstreams within engagements, owning the workplan, analysis, and synthesis from kickoff through final deliverable
  • Translate client objectives into structured research plans and defensible insights, guiding the team toward clear recommendations
  • Manage and mentor Associates by delegating tasks, providing feedback, and ensuring quality across outputs
  • Structure client deliverables, driving storyline development, content quality, and narrative clarity
  • Present findings directly to clients, addressing questions and driving alignment on conclusions
  • Develop industry and functional depth, building toward subject matter expertise
  • Contribute to business development efforts and support the development of junior team members

What Makes This Role Different

At Grant Thornton Stax, Senior Consultants gain accelerated ownership and visibility that can take longer to earn elsewhere. You’ll experience:

  • Meaningful leadership responsibility, including managing workstreams and guiding Associates
  • Direct exposure to senior leaders and clients, with real influence on deliverables and insights
  • A content- and insight-driven culture, where analytical rigor and point of view matter
  • A global support model, with integrated international teams delivering research and analytical leverage so you can focus on higher-value thinking
  • Rapid professional growth, with clear pathways toward Manager and beyond
  • Minimal travel (~10%), supporting a sustainable consulting model

Qualifications

  • 3 – 5 years of experience in strategy consulting, with a demonstrated track record of leading due diligence or strategy workstreams
  • Experience in corporate strategy, private equity, or venture capital is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree with demonstrated academic excellence; MBA preferred but equivalent work experience considered
  • Strong strategic thinking skills and comfort with structured business analysis
  • Excellent quantitative and analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Advanced PowerPoint and Excel proficiency required
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities under tight timelines
  • High initiative, intellectual curiosity, and strong collaboration skills
  • Experience managing small teams or leading defined modules within larger engagements

Compensation & Benefits

This role offers a base salary range of $165,000–$190,000, plus a discretionary bonus. Base salary is commensurate with experience.

We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your family; a 401(k) plan with company matching; open vacation policy; life and disability insurance; generous parental leave; pre-tax transit benefits; mobile phone stipend; wellness reimbursement; charitable gift matching; and more.

Grant Thornton Stax is an equal opportunity employer and affords equal opportunity to all applicants for all positions without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability (except where the disability is a bona fide occupational disqualification), sexual orientation, genetic makeup, predisposition or carrier status, familial or marital status, military or veteran status or any other status protected under local, state or federal laws.
