What is freelance strategy consulting?

Freelance strategy consulting involves independent professionals who provide expert advice to organizations on business strategy, growth, and problem-solving. Unlike consultants at large firms, freelancers work on a contract or project basis, offering flexible and specialized insights tailored to each client’s needs. They help businesses identify opportunities, streamline operations, and create actionable plans to achieve goals. Freelance strategy consultants may work across industries and often bring diverse experience to their clients.

What are the top 5 freelancing jobs?

For freelance strategy consulting, common top jobs include management consulting, marketing strategy, financial advisory, business analysis, and operations consulting. These roles often require strong analytical skills, industry knowledge, and proficiency with tools like Excel or project management software. Freelancers in these areas typically work with clients across various industries on project-based or retainer arrangements.

Is 30 too old to get into consulting?

Freelance strategy consulting is accessible to individuals of any age, including those starting at 30 or older. Success often depends on relevant experience, skills, and network rather than age, and many consultants transition into the field after diverse careers or gaining specialized expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Strategy Consultant, and why are they important?

Freelance Strategy Consultants need strong analytical abilities, business acumen, and experience in strategic planning, often supported by a relevant degree such as in business or economics. Familiarity with data analysis tools (like Excel, Power BI), project management software, and sometimes certifications such as PMP or MBA credentials are highly valuable. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and client relationship skills help consultants stand out in delivering actionable insights and building trust. These competencies are crucial for identifying challenges, crafting effective strategies, and ensuring client satisfaction in a highly competitive, project-based environment.

How to become a freelance strategy consultant?

To become a freelance strategy consultant, develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills, typically gained through a background in business, management, or related fields. Build a portfolio of successful projects, establish a professional network, and create a personal brand or website to attract clients. Gaining experience through consulting firms or industry roles can also enhance credibility and expertise.

How do freelance strategy consultants typically balance multiple client projects and manage their workload effectively?

Freelance strategy consultants often juggle several client projects simultaneously, which requires strong time management and organizational skills. They usually set clear expectations with clients regarding deliverables and timelines, and may use project management tools to track progress and deadlines. Regular communication and scheduled check-ins help ensure alignment and prevent bottlenecks. Additionally, freelancers often prioritize tasks based on impact and urgency, and may collaborate with other consultants or subcontractors during peak periods to maintain quality and meet client needs.

Job description

Company Description

Heartbeat is a full-service agency for healthcare Challenger Brands. Challengers are playing a high-stakes game-they must battle behemoth market leaders, upend ingrained treatment habits, or transform a "me-too" product into "yes-please."

The agency is known for serving up distinctive strategies and differentiating approaches, ensuring clients' market positions are uniquely owned. Heartbeat designs their organization around a 100% integration model, housing media, strategy, med comms, creative, technology, and even point of care/population health under the same roof for the tightest, most integrated campaigns possible. They price work based on outcomes, not outputs. Their innovative model delivers not only alignment, but powerful orchestration, greater efficiency, and maximum impact for every dollar spent-all the necessary elements for Challengers to triumph.

That's the philosophy, here's the creds: 250+ employees between NYC & LA; 6 agency leaders with decades of tenure; a pile of awards from the likes of the Mannys, MM&M Awards, OMMAs, and Clios; an industry-leading commitment to diversity and inclusion (with a Med Ad News D&I Champion nod to match); and a President who dared to be quoted as saying, "We celebrate people who stand up and say, 'You know what? This is dumb.' Damn straight.

Overview

We're looking for a visionary strategist to join Heartbeat's leadership team as SVP, Strategy. This is a high-impact role leading multidisciplinary strategic engagements, serving as a trusted advisor to senior clients, and shaping the future of both our brands and our agency.

Responsibilities
  • Lead large, multi-disciplinary engagements spanning brand positioning, engagement planning, and measurement
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior clients, building lasting relationships and delivering forward-looking counsel
  • Drive organic growth within key accounts and play a leading role in new business pitches
  • Collaborate across creative, media, data, and technology to embed strategy in everything we do
  • Lead and mentor the strategy team, setting best practices and elevating the agency's strategic thinking
  • Represent Heartbeat externally through thought leadership and industry presence
Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience in strategy, planning, or consulting, ideally in healthcare
  • Proven ability to lead large-scale strategy engagements and advise at the C-suite level
  • A track record of driving business growth through both organic expansion and new business wins
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and team-building skills
  • A curious, innovative mindset with the courage to challenge conventions
