What is a strategic account manager?

A Strategic Account Manager is a professional responsible for building and maintaining strong, long-term relationships with an organization’s most important clients, often referred to as key or strategic accounts. Their primary goal is to understand the client’s business needs, align company offerings to those needs, and drive mutual growth and success. They work closely with clients to ensure satisfaction, identify new business opportunities, and coordinate internal resources to deliver tailored solutions. This role often involves collaborating with sales, marketing, and product teams to provide a seamless client experience and achieve revenue targets.

What does a strategic account manager do?

A strategic account manager works in various industries, including eCommerce, hospitality, and healthcare. The job is similar to sales except the focus is on long-term goals and optimization of customer accounts. In this career, you often work as part of a team to manage client relationships and create value to improve sales performance across the board. Your responsibilities include collaborating with sales staff and a variety of vendors to broker deals. You may work business-to-business or business-to-customer. Frequent travel is common in this position, and additional weekend and night hours are typical. The job is often stressful with strong pressure to meet sales objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a strategic account manager, and why are they important?

To excel as a Strategic Account Manager, you need a solid background in sales, account management, and relationship building, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, data analytics tools, and contract management systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills help you build trust and deliver value to key clients. These abilities are crucial for driving revenue growth, fostering long-term partnerships, and achieving business objectives.

How does a strategic account manager typically collaborate with internal teams to support key clients?

A Strategic Account Manager works closely with cross-functional teams such as sales, marketing, product development, and customer support to ensure that client needs are met effectively. They often act as the main point of contact between the client and the company, coordinating resources and facilitating communication to deliver tailored solutions. Regular internal meetings and strategy sessions are common, helping to align goals and address any potential challenges proactively. This collaborative approach is key to building long-term relationships and driving value for both the client and the company.

Account Executive (Account Manager)
Location: Springfield, MA
Type: Full-Time
Overview
At Market Mentors, we don't just manage accounts; we drive outcomes. We operate as an extension of our clients' teams, aligning strategy, execution, and performance to deliver measurable growth.
We are looking for an Account Executive who thrives in a fast-paced, integrated marketing environment. This role is responsible for owning client relationships, driving execution across teams, and ensuring work is delivered accurately, on time, and aligned with business objectives.
This is a high-visibility role that requires accountability, initiative, and the ability to lead both clients and internal teams with confidence.
What You'll Do
Account Management
    • Own the full client lifecycle, from onboarding through ongoing engagement
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned clients
    • Lead regular client communications, including status updates, reporting, and strategic discussions
    • Strategic planning through execution

Delivery Excellence
    • Ensure all deliverables are accurate, on time, and aligned with expectations
    • Maintain visibility into project status, timelines, and resourcing
    • Proactively identify risks and solve issues before they impact delivery
    • Uphold quality control across all work streams

Client Service & Growth
    • Deliver exceptional client service that builds trust and long-term relationships
    • Identify opportunities to expand services and drive account growth
    • Bring forward ideas, insights, and recommendations that add value
    • Actively contribute to client success and retention

Team Liaison
    • Collaborate closely with internal teams including digital, creative, PR, and media
    • Translate client needs into clear, actionable direction for internal teams
    • Ensure alignment across all disciplines for integrated execution
    • Keep communication flowing and teams accountable

Opportunity Identification
    • Proactively identify new opportunities within existing accounts
    • Support proposal development and scope expansion
    • Partner with leadership on strategic growth initiatives

Problem Solving
    • Address challenges quickly and effectively with a solutions-first mindset
    • Navigate client feedback and internal constraints with professionalism
    • Drive resolution while maintaining strong relationships

What We're Looking For
    • 3-5+ years of account management experience in an agency or related environment
    • Strong understanding of integrated marketing (digital, traditional, PR, content)
    • Exceptional communication and organizational skills
    • Ability to manage multiple clients and priorities simultaneously
    • Proactive, solutions-oriented mindset
    • High level of accountability and ownership
    • Comfort working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

What Success Looks Like
    • Clients view you as a trusted partner, not just a point of contact
    • Work is delivered accurately, on time, and aligned with strategy
    • Opportunities for growth are consistently identified and acted upon
    • Internal teams are aligned, informed, and operating efficiently
    • You bring ideas forward, not just questions

You'll be part of a team that:
    • Works collaboratively across disciplines
