What is a storage architect?

A Storage Architect is an IT professional who designs, implements, and manages data storage solutions for organizations. They analyze business needs and create strategies for storing, protecting, and retrieving data efficiently and securely. Storage Architects work with various storage technologies, such as SAN (Storage Area Network), NAS (Network Attached Storage), and cloud storage, ensuring systems are scalable and resilient. Their role is crucial in maintaining data availability, performance, and compliance with industry standards.

What are some common challenges a storage architect faces when designing solutions for rapidly growing organizations?

A Storage Architect often encounters challenges such as scaling infrastructure to keep up with data growth, ensuring data security and compliance, and integrating legacy systems with new technologies. Balancing performance, cost, and reliability while adapting to changing business requirements is also a key concern. Effective communication with stakeholders and close collaboration with IT, security, and application teams are essential to develop robust, future-proof storage solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a storage architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Storage Architect, you need deep expertise in storage systems design, data management, and strong knowledge of SAN/NAS technologies, typically supported by a degree in IT or computer science. Familiarity with storage platforms like NetApp, Dell EMC, or HPE, virtualization tools, and relevant certifications such as SNIA or vendor-specific credentials is often required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively across IT teams and address complex client needs. These competencies are essential for designing scalable, reliable storage solutions that support business continuity and performance requirements.

What is the difference between Storage Architect vs Storage Engineer?

AspectStorage ArchitectStorage Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in IT or related field, with certifications like Cisco, EMC, or NetAppSimilar credentials, often with certifications in specific storage technologies or vendors
Work EnvironmentDesigns and plans storage solutions, often in a strategic or project-based settingImplements, maintains, and troubleshoots storage systems on a day-to-day basis
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in enterprise IT departments, data centers, and consulting firmsCommon in IT departments across various industries, focusing on operational storage management

While both roles require similar certifications and work in enterprise environments, Storage Architects focus on designing storage solutions and strategies, whereas Storage Engineers handle the implementation and maintenance of those systems.

Job description

Technical Staff-Storage Architect

Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG)ย builds the products that power infrastructure, solutions, and data management our customers need most. Our teams design and develop the hardware and software that connect infrastructure, accelerate computational workloads, integrate across the stack, protect data continuity, and deliver the platforms, applications, and diagnostics our customers rely on every day at enterprise scale.ย

Some product builders follow the rules. Ours rewrite them.

Within ISG, innovation isn't just about creating new technology- it's about challenging assumptions and reimagining how work gets done. Engineers define intent, author precise specifications, and orchestrate AI agents that execute at speed and scale. AI is embedded throughout our development process, helping us move faster, learn quicker, and deliver greater impact. Yet the most important contribution remains uniquely human: deciding what to build, designing how it should work, and applying the judgment needed to earn our customers' trust. When your products power critical infrastructure around the world, that responsibility matters.

We move quickly toward the work that matters most. We reward experimentation, encourage bold thinking, and remove unnecessary barriers so great ideas can become reality faster. Our teams embrace a customer-first, first-to-market mindset, transforming rapid feedback into better products and better outcomes. We aren't looking for people who are content with the status quo- we look for builders who question it, improve it, and occasionally rewrite it.

If you're energized by solving complex systems challenges, excited to work alongside AI to amplify your impact, and motivated by the opportunity to shape what's next instead of simply maintaining what's been done before, you'll find your place here.

Join us and help build the future of enterprise technology.ย
From applied research to advanced engineering, the Engineering Technologist team has the expertise to
shape ground-breaking products, material and processes. It's a fascinating field of work. We're involved in
assessing the competition, developing technology and product strategies and generating intellectual
property. We lead technology investigations, analyze industry capabilities and recommend potential
acquisitions or vendor partner opportunities. Our insights influence product architecture and definitions.
And we work with colleagues across the business to ensure our products always lead the way.

Join us to do the best work of your career and make a profound social impact as a Technical Staff-
Storage Architect on our Engineering Technologist Team in Round Rock, Texas

What you'll achieve
Participate in the development of next-generation large-scale AI Infrastructure to include accelerated
compute, AI Fabric and AI optimized storage. Engage with high profile AI customers to optimize solutions
for their applications and tune systems for maximum performance. Drive innovation at datacenter level
with liquid cooling technologies and power density.

You will:

  • Serve as the technical leader interfacing with enterprise customers to define architectures, understand workload requirements, and translate them into comprehensive solution designs. • Lead investigations new fabric technologies, and storage platforms to support largescale AI deployments. Serve as a technical escalation point for complex development challenges and represent Dell in internal and external architecture forums
  • Generate intellectual property, including invention disclosures and technology strategy insights and influence multi-year technology and product roadmaps with inputs from engineering, manufacturing, procurement, customers, and the broader industry.
