The Service Technician position is divided into three categories based on skill level and experience; A Class, B Class, and C Class.
A Class functions as a skilled-level technician who is able to perform diagnoses and repairs in all areas, in addition to being specialized in particular areas of repair and who has previously worked as a B-Class general service technician.
B Class functions as an experienced technician who is able to perform diagnoses and repairs of most vehicle components with little supervision required, and who has previously worked as a C-Class general service technician.
C Class performs most tasks assigned with some supervision required. Requires average mechanical knowledge.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Standard Duties/Responsibilities
  • Performs work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy, in accordance with dealership and factory standards with limited or no supervision.
  • Communicates with parts department to obtain needed parts.
  • Saves and tags parts of the job if under warranty or if requested by the customer.
  • Examines assigned vehicle to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended.
  • Communicates with service advisor immediately if additional work is needed, if work outlined is not needed, or if repairs cannot be completed within the promised time.
  • Documents all work performed and recommended on the repair order.
  • Road tests vehicles when required or refers to the test technician.
  • Participates in manufacturer-sponsored training programs, schools and events.
  • Keeps abreast of manufacturer technical bulletins.
  • Reports machinery defects or malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Ensures that customers' cars are kept clean. Notifies service advisor immediately of anything that has happened to change the appearance or condition of the vehicle.
  • Keeps shop area neat and clean.
  • Maintains and is accountable for all dealership-owned tools and manuals. Returns them to the proper place and in the same condition as they were received.
  • Understands, keeps abreast of and complies with federal, state and local regulations, such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-to-Know etc.
  • Operates all tools and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Reports any safety issues immediately to management.
  • Ensures customer vehicles are kept clean and returned in the same condition that they were brought in
  • Other tasks as assigned.

A Class Duties/Responsibilities
  • Diagnoses the cause of any malfunction and performs repair.
  • Supervises work of any apprentice technicians as assigned.

B Class Duties/Responsibilities
  • Diagnoses the cause of most malfunctions and performs repair.
  • Supervises work of any apprentice technicians as assigned.

C Class Duties/Responsibilities
  • Diagnoses vehicle problems based on customer complaints and inspection.
  • Installs optional equipment specified by the customer or dealer.

  • Must be able to be on time and work the entirety of your scheduled shift.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks within their workstation.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Operate a variety of hand, power, and shop tools and use computer diagnostic equipment.
  • Must be able to operate equipment such as overhead and floor mounted oil and grease guns, transmission machines, air conditioner service machines, radiator service machines, hand tools, and shop equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and move work-related items up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to push, pull, lift, and bend at the knees and waist, twist body at the waist, raise and hold arms overhead, and turn head-neck-shoulders as needed.

A Class Required Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.
  • Moderate computer and internet literacy
  • Complete knowledge of and experience in, the diagnostics and repair of brakes, steering and suspension systems, transmissions and drive axles.
  • Possession of a complete set of mechanical hand tools, including metric sizes.

B Class Required Skills/Abilities
  • Moderate computer and internet literacy
  • Intermediate knowledge of and experience in the diagnostics and repair of brakes, steering and suspension systems, transmissions, and drive axles.
  • Possession of mechanical hand tools, including metric sizes.

C Class Required Skills/Abilities
  • Basic computer and internet literacy
  • Basic knowledge of and some experience in the diagnostics and repair of brakes, steering and suspension systems, transmissions, and drive axles, and working a shop lift and equipment.
  • Possession of some mechanical hand tools, including metric sizes.

Standard Education and Experience
  • Experience with Electric and Hybrid vehicles a plus!
  • Must be able to pass a background check, drug screening, and Motor Vehicle Report.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications (for C Class, must be willing to acquire if you do not already possess)
  • Manufacturer Training (for C Class, must be willing to acquire if you do not already possess)
  • Additional certifications as applicable

A Class Education and Experience
  • Require five or more years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

B Class Education and Experience
  • Requires three to four years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

C Class Education and Experience
  • Prefer but do not require one to two years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
