Job description

Staff Software Engineer (Full Stack, Backend-Leaning)

The Opportunity

Our client is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join their early engineering team. This is a full-stack role with a backend lean, ideal for someone who can own larger technical systems end-to-end, set engineering direction, and help define how AI should be used responsibly in clinical environments.

This role is not just about shipping featuresโ€”it's about building the foundation: architecture, patterns, reliability, and the team's approach to execution.

What You'll Do

  • Lead end-to-end delivery of impactful features across React, TypeScript, Postgres, and AWS Lambda, improving real workflows for staff and patients
  • Set technical direction for core systems: API design, data modeling, scalability, reliability, and deployment patterns
  • Design robust, extensible systems built for the realities of clinical environments (edge cases, safety, change management, uptime)
  • Shape how AI is applied across the platformโ€”both to improve engineering velocity and to safely automate high-value workflows
  • Partner closely with product and clinical teams to navigate tradeoffs across safety, usability, compliance, and automation
  • Own the full project arc: clarify goals, shape architecture, manage risk, coordinate execution, and improve after launch
  • Raise the bar across engineering by improving standards, code review quality, observability, incident readiness, and release confidence
  • Mentor teammates and help build an engineering culture where concerns surface early and releases get smoother over time

What Our Client Is Looking For

Must-Haves

  • Strong full-stack engineering background with a backend focus; proven track record shipping end-to-end systems
  • Expertise with modern web and backend development (React + TypeScript; Postgres; strong API fundamentals)
  • Experience building and operating production systems in the cloud (AWS preferred; serverless/Lambda experience is a plus)
  • Strong architectural instincts: systems thinking, clean abstractions, maintainability, performance, and reliability
  • Product-minded engineering: you care about UX quality, workflow clarity, and adoptionโ€”not just code
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity, making decisions with imperfect information, and driving alignment across stakeholders
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to lead through influence (not org chart)

Ideal Signals

  • You've built systems in high-trust domains (healthcare, finance, security) where correctness matters
  • You've shipped AI-assisted or AI-powered features with real guardrails (evaluation, monitoring, fallback paths)
  • You've implemented practices that increase delivery confidence: testing strategy, observability, incident response patterns, safer rollout processes

Why This Role

  • Early-team ownership with meaningful influence over architecture, product direction, and engineering culture
  • Mission-driven work that directly improves how hospitals operate and how patients experience care
  • AI applied practically and responsiblyโ€”automation where it helps, safeguards where it matters
  • A rare chance to build the foundation and standards that the company scales on
