Job description

Overview

The Staff Engineer plans and conducts work requiring judgment and independent evaluation in the development and execution of subsurface exploration techniques, conducts engineering analysis, prepares reports, and provides construction project oversight. A Staff Engineer acts as a resource and specialist in the application of geotechnical engineering concepts, analysis, and principles in the discipline.  The Staff Engineer works under the supervision of the designated location manager and senior staff.

The Staff Engineer will assist with projects from inception to completion, including preparation of technical and cost proposals, oversight of field technicians, engineering analyses, laboratory test results, and preparation of deliverables on schedule and within budget. The Staff Engineer is responsible for meeting the company's objectives for chargeability, attention to detail, and have a strong willingness to learn.

This role is a hybrid (3-day office)  located in our Torrance office. Ideally, we'd like candidates to live within 1 hour of the office. 

Responsibilities
  • Support project managers and senior staff with planning and executing large and small projects with complex features.
  • Reviews work products for compliance with provisions of the Quality Control Manual.
  • As an individual researcher or worker, carries out complex assignments that require the development of new or improved techniques and procedures.
  • Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of field technicians and other technical or administrative personnel who assist in specific assignments.
  • Develops and reviews technical and cost proposals, technical deliverables, and other documents.
  • Serves as staff professional on construction projects, observing and approving foundation excavations, ground improvement, temporary and permanent shoring, and cut and fill slopes.
  • Manages subsurface explorations, including sampling and logging of boreholes, installing geotechnical instrumentation such as monitoring wells and inclinometers, and supervising subcontractors.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, a Masters is a plus
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification desired. Working towards PE licensure is expected.
  • Minimum 3 years of geotechnical Field Engineer construction experience required.
  • Construction experience is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of current regulatory requirements and industry standards for the types of projects performed.
  • Excellent communication skills with clients, contractors, and colleagues.
  • Excellent writing skills, language usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and ability to produce reports that are complete and accurate in a timely manner.
  • Consistently demonstrates sound professional judgment, attention to detail, and excellent time management.
  • Willingness to travel to complete assignments. Must have a valid driver's license and an insurable driving record.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Physical and Environmental Factors:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects and materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time. Intermittently walk, stand, kneel, bend, reach, and stoop.
  • May be required to work outside normal business hours. Frequent travel may be required, including out-of-town assignments.
  • Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.
  • Must adhere to NV5 safety practices and policies.
  • Truck or SUV required to perform field investigations and work on construction sites

The pay range for this position in California is $90,000 to $105,000 per hour. Base pay offered may be higher or lower depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location of the candidate. Restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
