Shift Details: Days M-F including overnight/weekend call
Department: Spiritual Care | Reports To: Supervisor-Spiritual Care
The mission of Faith Health is to serve Christ by providing all people with exemplary medical services in an environment of love and care.
Summary:
Performs spiritual care functions associated with the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church. Is a member in good standing of a Catholic parish. Is trained to provide Holy Communion to Catholic patients and their primary support persons in accord with pastoral practice of the Catholic Church. Provides spiritual care to all acute, palliative, and hospice patients (as well as their primary support persons) as referred or assigned. The Chaplain Associate is sensitive to verbal and non-verbal communication between patients and their primary support persons. Capable of active and empathic listening, frequently asking for clarification when personal, emotional and spiritual matters are offered by patient or primary support person. The Chaplain Associate is consistently respectful of cultural diversity in conversation with patients, family and staff, including (but not limited to) age, gender, sexual orientation and spiritual and religious beliefs and practices.

Responsibilities:
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Functions in a manner that respects the physical, emotional and spiritual boundaries of others.
2. Able to identify professional strengths, growth areas and limitations in the provision of spiritual care.
3. Able to assess when a referral to a chaplain, clergyperson or other professional is appropriate.
4. Functions within a professional code of ethics, including the Faith Health Code of Ethical Behavior and the Common Code of Ethics-developed by the Council on Collaboration for the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains and other certifying associations.
5. Provides effective spiritual and emotional support that contributes to the well-being of patients, their support persons, staff.
6. Documents provision of care in appropriate records.
7. Refers to chaplain spiritual care situations that indicate family meetings and/or group support may likely be beneficial.
8. Contributes to the overall effectiveness of the of the Spiritual Care Department, including, but not limited to:
  • Writing articles for publication in Faith Health newsletters and bulletins.
  • Leading chapel services.
  • Providing after office hours on-call on assigned weekdays, weekends and holidays.
  • Provides Holy Communion for Catholic patients and Catholic primary support persons.
  • Provides spiritual care for Catholic home-health and hospice patients in accordance with safe practice.

Hours will be dependent on patient census and workload. Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, to include after-hours and weekends as necessary.
