Reserve Police Officer (part-time 28 hours/week)
The Reserve Police Officer (part-time) is responsible for protecting life and property, conducting patrols, responding to emergencies, and enforcing laws on the BYU campus. This role includes criminal investigations, arrest procedures, and the maintenance of order across campus properties. Officers are expected to perform their duties ethically and lawfully, with professionalism and integrity. They may also assist with shift planning and coordination in the absence of a supervisor.
**Must be available to work M-F between the hours of 8 AM - 5PM**
What You'll Do in This Position:
  • Patrol campus by foot, bicycle, or patrol vehicle to ensure the safety of the university community
  • Respond to alarms, medical emergencies, accidents, and hazardous situations
  • Conduct investigations, make lawful arrests, issue citations, and prepare comprehensive incident reports
  • Provide law enforcement support during special events, such as athletic games, concerts, and conferences
  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, and local agencies, and promote crime prevention and public safety
  • Supervise shift operations and complete administrative tasks when a sergeant is not on duty
  • Maintain readiness for emergencies and work in varying weather conditions and high-stress environments

What Qualifies You for This Role:
Required:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum age 21 and U.S. citizenship
  • Utah POST Category 1 certification or enrollment in a certified academy
  • Valid Utah Driver License with clean driving record
  • No convictions for serious criminal, traffic, drug, or domestic violence offenses
  • Successful completion of background check, physical exam, and fitness test
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, holidays, and frequent overtime for events
  • Proficiency in firearms, Taser, radio, first aid equipment, and law enforcement software
  • Certification in CPR and Intoxilyzer
  • Completion of Basic Accident Investigation and SFST
  • Proficiency with UCJIS and Spillman systems
  • Strong decision-making and critical thinking skills in high-pressure situations
  • Familiarity with campus layout, BYU policies, and emergency procedures
  • Ability to enforce federal, state, and local laws and departmental procedures
  • Physical fitness and tactical readiness maintained per department standards

Preferred:
  • College degree or equivalent educational background
  • Prior law enforcement experience
  • Supervisory or mentoring experience with student employees
  • Knowledge of crime prevention theory and university-specific policies
