Job Details:Mercer Athletics is searching for an Assistant Director of Event Management.


Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Director of Operations and Event Management, the Assistant Director of Event Management supports the planning, coordination, and execution of athletic and special event operations for assigned sports and facilities. Primary responsibilities include soccer, basketball, softball, and tennis with additional support provided for football, baseball, and lacrosse operations. The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing games and practice preparations, facility operations, staffing, and event execution for assigned sports and venues.

The Assistant Director independently manages event operations, including staffing, facility setup and breakdown, event supervision, and operational support for all assigned home athletic contests and special events. The position oversees facility utilization, coordinates external rentals and community events, and provides operational leadership for university events hosted within athletic facilities.

This position exercises independent judgment in staffing allocations, event logistics, facility usage, and operational planning. Responsibilities include recruiting, training, scheduling, and supervising temporary personnel, interns, and student workers to ensure appropriate staffing and effective event support. In collaboration with the Director of Operations and Event Management, the Assistant Director participates in personnel management activities, including hiring, training, performance evaluation, and disciplinary recommendations.

The Assistant Director collaborates with campus departments, including Mercer Police, Physical Plant, Concessions, Special Event Catering, and Risk Management, as well as contracted service providers such as medical personnel, communications partners, and technology vendors, to ensure the successful delivery of athletic and special events. The position also supports the maintenance, readiness, and operational integrity of athletic facilities and equipment.

Additional responsibilities include overseeing athletic facility scheduling and event calendars, coordinating operational resources, serving as the departmental representative in the absence of the Director as assigned, and assisting with departmental initiatives, special projects, and other duties as assigned in support of Athletics events and operations.

Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree is required with one year experience within collegiate, professional or minor league athletics department, which includes some event planning, are required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with coaches, student-athletes, university administrators, campus partners, vendors, and event personnel to ensure successful event operations.

  • Knowledge of athletic event management, facility scheduling, and operational procedures, including the planning, coordination, setup, supervision, and breakdown of athletic and special events.

  • Ability to recruit, train, schedule, and supervise student workers, temporary personnel, and event staff while ensuring compliance with established procedures and service standards.

  • Ability to independently coordinate multiple events and priorities, exercise sound judgment, and effectively resolve operational issues in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to manage event logistics, coordinate support services, and ensure athletic facilities are appropriately staffed, prepared, and maintained for competitions, practices, and special events.

  • Ability to maintain accurate event schedules, facility calendars, staffing assignments, and operational records.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required by athletic events and facility operations.
