What qualifications do you need to be a spa manager?

A spa manager typically needs a high school diploma or equivalent, with many employers preferring post-secondary education in hospitality, business, or related fields. Relevant experience in spa or hospitality management, strong leadership skills, and knowledge of health and safety regulations are also important; certifications in massage therapy or cosmetology can be advantageous but are not always required. Strong communication, organizational skills, and familiarity with scheduling and point-of-sale systems are essential for success in this role.

What are some common challenges spa managers face in overseeing both staff and client satisfaction?

Spa Managers often balance the needs of their team with delivering excellent client experiences. Common challenges include managing diverse staff schedules, ensuring consistent service quality, and adapting to client feedback. Additionally, Spa Managers must handle inventory, maintain a relaxing environment, and keep up with industry trends. Successful managers foster open communication, provide ongoing staff training, and implement efficient procedures to address these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a spa manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Spa Manager, you need strong leadership, customer service expertise, and a background in hospitality or wellness management, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with spa management software, appointment scheduling systems, and inventory control tools is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, conflict resolution abilities, and attention to detail help set exceptional Spa Managers apart. We are looking for a true A-player: a highly observant, self-starting leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and takes full ownership of turning a small spa into a high-performing, well-run operation.
This is not a desk or 9-to-5 role. It is an active, on-your-feet position where you will be the authoritative presence driving standards every day. Recent managers have struggled with the pace and complexity. We need someone who will not.
Compensation
$45,000 base + performance incentives (OTE $55k-$60k for strong performers).
Benefits: PTO, service/product discounts, free monthly massage or facial, company life insurance, 401K
What the Role Demands
  • Be an extreme noticer and owner of standards: Spot and immediately fix details others miss- fingerprints on glass, dusty retail, unclean restrooms, presentation gaps. Maintain a spotless environment without being told.
  • Self-trainer and proactive problem-solver: Independently use Hand & Stone training videos, manuals, owners' Facebook group, and brand resources. Research Zenoti & platform issues yourself.
  • Floor leadership and coaching: Train and coach front desk daily through selling-by-example, role-play, feedback, and accountability. Demonstrate strong sales ability and coach others to improve conversions.
  • Operational discipline and people management: Handle email, Asana tasks, scheduling, inventory, compliance, hiring, training, discipline, PIPs, write-ups, and terminations. Provide brief daily reports to owners on key client/staff issues, wins, and operational blockers.
  • Authoritative leadership style: Tough but fair. Rise to challenges, tackle problems head-on, and never ignore them or hand them off to junior staff. Build a team that respects and wants to emulate you.

What We're Looking For
  • 2-3+ years spa/salon/retail/hospitality management experience with proven results in fast-paced settings.
  • Extreme attention to detail and high personal standards.
  • Strong ownership and desire for personal/professional growth through solving tough problems.
  • High resilience for a stressful role with high front-desk turnover.

Key Realities
  • 40+ hours/week. Standard schedule: 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM, Wednesday/Sunday off. Flexibility for closing shifts, holidays, and peaks.
  • Full in-spa presence from day one. Hands-on floor leadership required.

About Us
Hand & Stone Oak Forest is a family-owned spa focused on excellence and growth. Strong remote backend support handles systems/admin so you can focus on leadership. Positioned for expansion with a major retail development opening next door in 2027.
