How much do solar sales consultant jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for solar sales consultant in the United States is $136,496.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $102,000.00 and $170,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar sales consultant?

To thrive as a Solar Sales Consultant, you need a solid understanding of solar energy systems, sales principles, and often a background in sales or renewable energy. Familiarity with CRM software, solar design tools, and industry certifications like NABCEP can be highly advantageous. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills help consultants connect with clients and close deals. These combined skills ensure consultants can educate customers, tailor solutions, and drive adoption of solar technologies in a competitive market.

Is it hard to get into solar sales?

Solar sales consultants typically need strong communication skills, basic knowledge of solar technology, and sometimes sales or customer service experience. Entry can be competitive, but gaining relevant certifications or training can improve job prospects and ease entry into the field.

What are some common challenges solar sales consultants face when educating customers about solar energy solutions?

Solar Sales Consultants often encounter challenges such as addressing customer misconceptions about the cost, reliability, and maintenance of solar panels. Many customers may be unfamiliar with available financing options or local incentives, so consultants need to clearly explain the long-term benefits and return on investment. Additionally, tailoring solutions to each customer's unique property and energy needs can require effective communication and technical understanding. Overcoming these challenges often involves ongoing training, staying updated on industry developments, and building trust through transparent, consultative sales approaches.

What does a solar sales consultant do?

A Solar Sales Consultant educates potential customers about solar energy solutions and helps them determine if solar panels are a suitable option for their home or business. They assess the client's energy needs, provide customized proposals, and guide them through the purchasing process. These consultants also handle follow-ups, answer questions about financing or installation, and work to close sales, often collaborating with installation teams to ensure a smooth transition. Their primary goal is to help clients make informed decisions about adopting solar energy while meeting sales targets.

What is the difference between Solar Sales Consultant vs Solar Installer?

AspectSolar Sales ConsultantSolar Installer
CredentialsSales experience, knowledge of solar products, certifications like NABCEP Sales CertificationTechnical skills, NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification, safety training
Work EnvironmentOffice settings, client meetings, sales presentationsOn-site installation, construction sites, outdoor environments
Industry UsageEngaged in customer acquisition, product promotion, and sales processesResponsible for installing solar panels and system components

The main difference is that Solar Sales Consultants focus on selling solar solutions and engaging with clients, while Solar Installers handle the physical installation of solar systems. Both roles are essential in the solar industry but require different skill sets and certifications.

How do solar sales consultants get paid?

Solar sales consultants typically earn a combination of base salary and commissions based on the number of solar systems they sell or the revenue they generate. Compensation structures often include performance bonuses and may vary depending on the company, experience, and sales targets. Strong communication skills and product knowledge are important for success in this role.

Job description

About Ipsun Solar:

At Ipsun Solar, we’re committed to helping homeowners take control of their energy future with custom-designed solar solutions. Ipsun is part of the Civic Renewables Family, with solar companies installing in OH, PA, MD, DC, VA and FL. As part of our growing team, you’ll be at the forefront of the local clean energy movement, connecting clients with sustainable power options that fit their needs. We offer a competitive compensation package that includes medical, dental and vision insurance as well as matching 401(k) contributions. If you’re driven by results, passionate about solar, and ready to make a difference, you may be a great fit for our team!

Position Summary:

As sales consultant, your primary goal will be to sell and guide residential clients through the solar evaluation and decision making process. In this role, you will develop and manage leads from initial inquiry to contract signing, ensuring a smooth, transparent process for the client. In addition to pursuing leads generated by company marketing, a successful candidate will feel comfortable engaging strangers in conversation, and will proactively develop business through community engagement, public education, and other outreach efforts. Developing referrals from existing customers and other self generated sources are highly recommended and rewarded.

Staying informed about solar industry trends, products, and regulations is essential, as you’ll provide expert consultations and maintain competitive knowledge. Formal and informal training will be provided by Ipsun Solar staff as well as manufacturing representatives at our training facility. Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills are key to effectively conveying the benefits of solar energy, closing deals, and positively representing Ipsun Solar to the general public. The ability to meet in-person with prospective clients and remain resilient in the face of rejection are also essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pursue leads developed through our marketing and business development departments.
  • Generate new leads independently through referrals and community engagement.
  • Manage the complete sales cycle from lead generation through contract signing.
  • Track and organize client interactions and data within our CRM system.
  • Provide clear information on equipment, installation process, billing mechanisms, and general market conditions to prospective clients.
  • Recommend solar energy products, systems, and financing options tailored to customer energy needs, site conditions, preferences, and budget.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service as a primary point of contact for your customers.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:

  • Strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), and a customer-first mindset.
  • Knowledgeable about solar technology and/or willingness to learn quickly, with the ability to clearly explain the financial, technical, and environmental benefits of solar systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in consulting, sales, customer service, or solar energy (2+ years preferred).
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales goals and metrics.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly build relationships with strangers and persevere through adversity.
  • Self-starter who can work independently after training, with the ability to learn technical products, manage multiple responsibilities across various business platforms, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.

Compensation:

Our compensation package is designed to provide stability during the onboarding and training period, gradually transitioning into a performance-based structure consisting of a base salary plus sales commission. Qualified candidates can expect to earn $80,000-$120,000+ in their first year of employment, with opportunity for substantial growth as you expand your network of referrals.

Benefits:

  • 401(k)
  • 401(k) matching
  • Flexible schedule
  • Health insurance
  • Opportunities for advancement
  • Paid time off
  • Paid training
  • Professional development assistance
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Vision insurance
