Job description

Position Overview

Our client is investing heavily in the future of the IBM i platform and is looking for a talented Senior IBM i Software Engineer who wants to be part of that transformation.

This is not a traditional "legacy RPG" position. You'll work on modern IBM i application development while helping drive the adoption of AI-assisted software engineering practices across the development organization. The team is leveraging next-generation AI coding tools to improve development speed, code quality, testing, documentation, and modernization efforts.

The ideal candidate enjoys solving complex business problems, collaborating directly with business users, and continually learning new technologies. If you're excited about combining deep IBM i expertise with modern AI development tools, this is an excellent opportunity.

What You'll Do

  • Design, develop, enhance and support enterprise business applications on the IBM i platform.
  • Develop clean, maintainable RPGLE / Free RPG and SQL-based solutions.
  • Partner with business users to gather requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Design, prototype, test and implement new application functionality.
  • Participate in application modernization initiatives and API/Web Services development.
  • Work with Python and other modern technologies where appropriate.
  • Utilize AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity, automate repetitive coding tasks, accelerate testing, generate documentation, and improve overall code quality.
  • Participate in code reviews and continuously improve development standards.

Perform integration testing and quality assurance

  • prior to production releases.
  • Mentor junior developers and contribute to technical leadership across the team.
  • Help shape the future direction of the IBM i development environment.

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong IBM i (AS/400) development experience
  • RPGLE / Free RPG
  • Embedded SQL and advanced SQL development
  • Relational database design
  • Web Services and API development
  • SDLC and Agile development methodologies
  • ERP or other enterprise business application experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Modern Development Experience

Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:

  • Python
  • Django
  • JavaScript
  • React (preferred over Angular)
  • HTML5 / CSS
  • Docker
  • Cloud-based application development
  • Business Intelligence tools

AI & Modern Software Engineering

As part of our modernization strategy, our development organization is actively adopting AI-assisted software engineering. Candidates should have experience with—or a genuine interest in learning—modern AI development tools such as:

  • Cursor AI
  • Claude (including Claude Opus models)
  • Claude Code CLI
  • Project Bob
  • AI-assisted code generation, debugging, documentation and refactoring workflows

We're looking for engineers who view AI as a productivity accelerator while continuing to apply strong software engineering principles and sound technical judgment.

What We're Looking For

  • Passion for continuous learning
  • Ability to work independently on complex technical initiatives
  • Strong business acumen and customer interaction skills
  • Interest in modernizing enterprise IBM i applications
  • Curiosity about emerging AI technologies and how they can improve software development
  • Leadership potential and willingness to mentor other developers

Why This Opportunity?

This is an opportunity to join a company that continues to rely on the strength and reliability of IBM i while actively investing in its future. Rather than simply maintaining legacy systems, you'll help modernize a critical enterprise platform using today's development practices and tomorrow's AI-powered engineering tools.
