PositionSummary
The Senior Manager of Board Development works in a collaborative and integrated manner across the Impact Team as well as across all other areas of United Way of Central Indiana to ensure the health and resilience of the nonprofit sector through strengthened organizational governance. The Senior Manager of Board Development is responsible for establishing standards and systems that ensure the delivery of high-quality training and development programs for community-based organization boards. This work strengthens board governance and supports the long-term sustainability of the nonprofit sector in Central Indiana. The role also partners with the Sector Support Director and the Vice President of Government and Sector Relations to develop strategy and drive continuous improvement initiatives related to board development and sector support efforts.
The Senior Manager provides strategic leadership for board development programming including design and delivery, and oversight of contracted staff. The role also manages incentive funding for participating organizations and provides or coordinates technical assistance to nonprofit partners. Through this work, the Senior Manager ensures programs and resources are delivered effectively, fosters collaboration across the sector, and supports continuous improvement in performance and impact. This position is funded by a grant that is currently anticipated to provide funding for approximately three years. Continued employment is subject to organizational needs and the availability of grant funding.
PositionDuties & Responsibilities

Program Development, Implementation, and Evaluation
- Manage program development,implementationand evaluation of United Way’s board governance training programs.
- Lead the development of curriculum for board training programs, including an overall board governance training module and a specialized organizational finance module.
- Ensure alignment of curriculum and program sessions to overall goals of board development grant proposal and meet learning objectives around core governance responsibilities, financial oversight and literacy, strategic leadership, and board operations and effectiveness.
- Provide fiscal management including budget oversight and resource allocation for all areas of the program, including financial incentives for participation of accredited community-based organizations.
- Lead cross-functional collaboration across United Way’s functional areas for reporting, budget/financial review, program evaluation,continuous improvement, organizational accreditation/re-accreditation,and other needs.
- May perform special assignments or other work, as needed.
Consultant Selection, Management, and Oversight
- In collaboration with the Sector Support Director, identify and select qualified consultants to engage in curriculum design and facilitation of training sessions.
- Work with United Way’s Enterprise Empowerment Division and Finance Team to develop consultant contracts that conform to United Way’s expectations and align with requirements in funder agreements and proposals.
- Ensure community-based organization interaction with consultant through structured engagement to ensure curriculum development is informed by professional expertise, community insight, and the diverse contexts in which board members operate.
- Provide direct leadership to and management of consultants in the curriculum design and content delivery processes.
- Ensure that consultants are meeting contractual obligations related to timely delivery of program materials and session facilitations.
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
- Work with Brand Division partners, develop communication and promotional materials to market the program to accredited and non-accredited community-based organizations.
- Work to develop processes to ensure required number of accredited organization board members participate over course of grant period. Ensure periodic outreach to accredited organizations where numbers of participating board members remain below accreditation threshold/standard to inform organizations of future training opportunities.
- Develop and manage relationships with external partners to ensure referrals and recommendations for program participation among non-accredited community-based organizations.
- Work closely with program funders to ensure continued alignment of program to United Way’s organizational goals, funding proposals, and funder expectations.
- Deliver high-quality customer service and support to external partners through provision of technical assistance, program delivery, and other interactions.
Qualifications (Education & Experience)
*Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education whereappropriate.
- Bachelor’s degreerequired,Master’sdegree preferredin an education or curriculum design field, human services, social work, or a closely related discipline.
- 4-6+years of relevant experience in the education, nonprofit, or community development sector preferred
- Project and/or program management experience with a demonstrated ability to develop, implement and execute to achieve intended results, by following through on commitments, prioritizing work, and managing time and resources
- Experience in designing curriculum and facilitating training or other programming required
- Experience managing consultants, contractors, or external service providers.
- Demonstrated experience building and managing community partnerships and networks and facilitating collaborative initiatives
- Past or current service on or engagement with nonprofit board of directors preferred
- Knowledge of the Central Indiana region and human services ecosystem preferred
Knowledge & Technical Skills
- Deep subject matter expertise as it relates to curriculum design, adult education, corporate and/or nonprofit governance, and financial literacy.
- Exceptional public speaking and executive-level facilitation skills
- Strong strategic thinking and ability to translate community insights, research, and analysis into actionable strategies and initiatives
- Ability to design, implement, and evaluate initiatives that strengthen nonprofit capacity and organizational resilience
- Ability to analyze quantitative and qualitative data to inform program improvements, investments, and strategic decisions
- Strong leadership and team development skills, including the ability to guide staff, manage workplans, and align teams around shared goals
- Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and priorities in a complex and evolving environment
- Strong relationship-building and facilitation skills with community organizations, intermediaries, and funders
- Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills with the ability to work effectively across internal teams and community partners
- Commitment to continuous learning and staying informed on sector trends, best practices, and emerging community needs
