Social Worker

The Veterans Health Administration is seeking Social Workers to support VA facilities across the United States. This is an open continuous announcement for Social Worker positions that may be filled on a full-time, part-time, or intermittent basis depending on facility needs. Social Workers provide psychosocial assessment, counseling, case management, treatment planning, outreach, and care coordination for Veterans and their families.

Location: Multiple VA locations nationwide

Salary: $62,155 - $154,265 per year

Pay Scale & Grade: GS-9 to GS-11

Work Schedule: Multiple schedules available; schedule will be determined upon selection

Appointment Type: Multiple; full-time, part-time, and/or intermittent schedules may be available

Telework: Telework availability depends on location and service line and is not guaranteed

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform case-finding and outreach to identify and screen Veterans for psychosocial needs.
• Conduct psychosocial assessments for Veterans, families, and caregivers.
• Develop treatment plans in collaboration with Veterans, families, caregivers, and interdisciplinary treatment teams.
• Provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals, families, and groups.
• Implement treatment modalities and psychosocial interventions.
• Identify high-risk patients and provide case management services.
• Coordinate community-based services, including referrals to VA programs, government programs, and community agencies.
• Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with Veterans and their families.
• Work with patients and families experiencing psychiatric, medical, and social problems.
• Provide consultation to staff regarding psychosocial needs and the impact of psychosocial issues on health care and treatment adherence.
• Provide consistent information to customers in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Handle conflict and consumer concerns constructively and appropriately.

Basic Qualifications:

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
• Must be subject to a background/security investigation.
• Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
• Must complete all application requirements and online onboarding requirements.
• Must participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program as required for Department of Veterans Affairs health care personnel.
• Must have a master's degree in social work from a school fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
• Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Licensure may be waived only for otherwise qualified GS-9 candidates pending completion of state requirements.

GS-9 Qualifications:

• Must meet the basic education and qualification requirements for Social Worker.
• Must demonstrate the ability to use a Veteran-centered approach when providing interventions and counseling.
• Must be able to assess psychosocial functioning and needs and formulate treatment plans.
• Must be able to implement treatment modalities with individuals, families, and groups.
• Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, and community agencies.
• Must have fundamental knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, treatment procedures, medications, and medical terminology.

GS-11 Qualifications:

• Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
• Must have at least one year of post-master's social work experience equivalent to the GS-9 level in a health care or social work-related setting, or a doctoral degree in social work.
• Must demonstrate knowledge of community resources and the ability to coordinate referrals to community and government agencies.
• Must be skilled in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions.
• Must understand medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, treatment procedures, medications, and medical terminology.
• Must be skilled in independently implementing treatment modalities with individuals, families, and groups.
• Must be able to provide consultation services to new social workers, social work graduate students, and other staff.

Physical Requirements:

• Day-to-day work may involve sitting, walking, standing, and carrying light objects such as medical records.
• Work is typically performed in a clinical setting.
• The role may involve exposure to communicable diseases common among vulnerable patient populations.
