CTDOT was recently awarded the Employer of the Year award by the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers (CSCE) and named the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS) CT Employer of the Year for 2024!\r\n\r\nPOSITION HIGHLIGHTS\r\n\r\n Office/On-Site\r\n Monday - Friday.\r\n Full Time, 40 hours per week.\r\n First Shift, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.\r\n Location: Southington, CT.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nTHE ROLE\r\nThis position is responsible for safely operating the Skid Steer Loader and other heavy equipment in accordance with safety guidelines, performing daily maintenance and safety checks on equipment within the District 1 area.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nJOB REQUIREMENTS\r\n\r\n\r\n Incumbents in this class are required to possess and maintain a current CDL Class A or B with tank endorsement, as well as a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC).\r\n Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed; to include mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Various storm events will require employees to stay at work for the duration of the storm, which at times could be up to a period of several days, including holidays and weekends.\r\n Incumbents in this class will be required to have 30-mile residency from the posted job location.\r\n Eligible candidates must complete an interview before participating in the skill evaluation practicum. The Agency will conduct a practicum, in accordance with Department of Transportation Administrative Guidelines, to assess whether applicants possess the necessary skills for the position. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation and the Connecticut Airport Authority this class is accountable for performing a variety of highly skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of state roadways, roadsides, bridges, airports and other departmental facilities; operates and maintains highly complex mechanical equipment; may serve as trainer.\r\n

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following is a listing of examples of trucks, equipment, tasks or related duties, the operating, maintenance, or performing of which are considered to be the responsibilities and duties of positions in this class:\r\nTRUCKS:\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n Low bed type trailer tractor;\r\n Hydraulic platform crane;\r\n Tractor trailer with tilt trailer or twenty (20) cubic yard dump trailer;\r\n Center Line Marking Machine (Truck);\r\n Ten (10) wheel, GVW of fifty eight thousand (58,000) pounds and eight hundred (800) gallon tank;\r\n Track-mounted skid steer with various attachments including but not limited to:\r\n \r\n Backhoe;\r\n Miller;\r\n Forestry;\r\n \r\n \r\n Glycol vacuum scrubber with eight (8) foot pickup header;\r\n Payloader with snow pusher;\r\n Airfield deicing truck with forty-five (45) foot spray boom;\r\n Double Wing Truck (Driver).\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\nEQUIPMENT:\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n Motor graders;\r\n Loader/backhoe;\r\n Loader Mounted Snow Blower (Two thousand (2,000) ton per hour and over);\r\n Snow Broom;\r\n Liquid asphalt application/joint sealing machine.\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\nDUTIES:\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n Backhoe operation;\r\n Post pounder operator;\r\n Vactor operator;\r\n Welding;\r\n Lead person in boundary stone setting;\r\n Lead person in test borings;\r\n Lead Vendor in Place (VIP) inspector;\r\n Trainer;\r\n Performing highly skilled tasks in one or more of the following areas or trades:\r\n \r\n Construction;\r\n Maintenance;\r\n Mechanical repair;\r\n Carpentry;\r\n Masonry;\r\n Welding;\r\n Plumbing;\r\n Painting;\r\n \r\n \r\n Highly skilled tree climbing work;\r\n Sign erecting requiring complex rigging;\r\n Center Line Marking Machine (Rear Switch Operator);\r\n District Equipment Coordinator/Radio Room operator (lead);\r\n District Projects Records Coordinator;\r\n Multi-Media First Aid Trainer;\r\n Highway Operations Center System Operator;\r\n Acting crew leader;\r\n May supervise a materials management stockroom;\r\n Wildlife hazard control;\r\n Radio monitoring and communication;\r\n Escort vendors, contractors, etc. in secure areas (state owned airports only);\r\n In addition to other duties, may be required to receive training in, stand by for and respond to fire and or crash emergency situations at state-owned airports;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n \r\n\r\n

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

\r\n Considerable knowledge of\r\n \r\n the construction, maintenance and repair techniques of roadways, roadsides, bridges or airports;\r\n the processes and materials used in the construction and maintenance of highway and bridges or airports;\r\n \r\n \r\n Skills\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;\r\n oral and written communication skills;\r\n \r\n \r\n Considerable ability to operate skillfully and make ordinary repairs to highly complex mechanical equipment as listed on the attached addendum;\r\n Ability to utilize computer software.\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in the construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadways, roadsides, bridges or airports, in work involving the operation and care of mechanical equipment or work in one of the recognized maintenance trades.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in the operation of complex equipment or the performance of skilled tasks.\r\n\r\nNOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Transportation Maintainer 3.\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of the subject requirements in one of the maintenance trades may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

\r\n Experience operating skid steer equipment.\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.\r\n Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal whenever their services are needed.\r\n\r\n

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

At state airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.\r\n

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.\r\n A physical examination may be required.\r\n\r\n

WORKING CONDITIONS

\r\n Incumbents in this class are exposed to extremes of weather conditions, to frequent lifting of heavy weights, to highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, including exposure to heights when working on bridges, to poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months, and to loud and potentially dangerous machinery.\r\n The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.\r\n\r\n
