Main Purpose of Job

\r\nThe primary purpose of this\r\nrole is to review and evaluate conditions of known or suspected contamination\r\nto determine the necessary extent of remediation. This includes overseeing\r\nactivities at Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) and Controlled Hazardous Substances\r\n(CHS) sites.\r\n\r\nKey responsibilities include:\r\n\r\n\r\n Independently evaluating the\r\n work of highly trained and experienced consultants.\r\n Reviewing and commenting on\r\n technical documents to ensure that site assessments and remediations meet\r\n standards for protecting human health and the environment across various media.\r\n Drafting formal\r\n correspondence, including letters, comments on applications and response plans,\r\n and site closure documents.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe physical\r\nrequirements and working conditions for this position below:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Work may involve\r\n exposure to temperature extremes and contaminated areas.\r\n The role requires\r\n inspecting areas with chemical and physical hazards, such as old landfills,\r\n former spill sites, dilapidated buildings, and debris-strewn locations.\r\n Requirements include\r\n lifting heavy equipment and supplies (50 pounds or more), climbing ladders, and\r\n wearing respiratory protection.\r\n Field activities\r\n require the use of respirators, gloves, goggles, and Tyvek suits.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe incumbent in this position will travel to sites throughout the State\r\nof Maryland and will be required to drive a State vehicle.\r\n\r\nDriver's License:A\r\nvalid driver's license with no more than five points is required to operate a\r\nState vehicle.\r\n\r\nOut-of-State Licenses:If\r\nyou hold an out-of-state license, you must provide a certified copy of your\r\ndriving record from the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at the time of\r\nappointment.\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must satisfy the minimum qualifications to be considered for this position and move forward in the hiring process. Please read all requirements before applying.\r\nEducation: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth science.\r\nExperience: Three years of experience performing professional geological work.\r\nNotes: \r\n1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology or a related earth sciencefor the required education and one year of the required experience.\r\n2.Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military serviceexperience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.\r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. \r\n2. Depending on the assigned essential functions of the work, employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website. \r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk\r\nover rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal\r\nprotection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment.\r\n2. Employees in this classification may be subject to\r\nongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and\r\nHealth Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste\r\nOperations and Emergency Response.\r\n3. Employees in this classification may be subject to\r\ncall-in on a twenty-four hour basis and, therefore, will be required to provide\r\nthe employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.\r\n4. The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE)\r\nMedical Monitoring Program (MMP) is designed to detect health risks or adverse\r\neffects of occupational exposure to hazardous materials and to direct targeted\r\ntreatment and occupational illness/injury prevention strategies. MDE\r\nemployees who may be exposed to hazardous materials are required to participate\r\nin a pre-placement, regular and/or post-termination medical examination. MDE\r\nhas determined that this position be part of the MMP; therefore, applicants\r\nselected for employment must successfully complete and pass the medical\r\nmonitoring examination as a condition of employment. Information regarding the\r\nMMP is provided by the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be\r\nobtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration website.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
