Employer & Industry UsageAgencies serve multiple clients across e-commerce sectorsFreelancers or in-house developers working on Shopify stores
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for full-service Shopify solutionsSeeking specialized development or customization services

Shopify Agencies offer comprehensive services including design, marketing, and development for multiple clients, while Shopify Developers focus primarily on coding, customization, and technical store setup. Agencies provide a broader range of solutions, whereas developers specialize in technical aspects of Shopify stores.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Shopify Agency professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Shopify Agency professional, you need expertise in e-commerce best practices, Shopify platform development, and a solid understanding of web design, often backed by experience or certification in Shopify or related web technologies. Familiarity with tools like Shopify Admin, Liquid templating language, third-party apps, and analytics platforms is typically required. Strong communication, project management, and problem-solving skills help build client relationships and deliver tailored solutions. These skills ensure the successful creation, optimization, and growth of client stores in a competitive online marketplace.

What is a Shopify agency?

A Shopify agency is a specialized company that helps businesses launch, customize, and optimize their online stores using the Shopify platform. These agencies offer a range of services, including store design, development, theme customization, app integration, digital marketing, and ongoing support. Their expertise helps businesses create user-friendly, visually appealing, and high-converting eCommerce sites. Working with a Shopify agency can save time and ensure your store is set up for success, whether you're starting from scratch or looking to improve an existing store.

What is the downside of Shopify?

For a Shopify agency, a key downside is that Shopify charges monthly fees and transaction fees unless using Shopify Payments, which can increase costs. Additionally, the platform has limited customization options compared to open-source solutions, and reliance on third-party apps can lead to increased complexity and potential performance issues.

What exactly does Shopify do?

Shopify is an e-commerce platform that allows businesses to create and manage online stores, handle product listings, payments, and shipping. A Shopify agency helps clients build, customize, and optimize these online stores using Shopify's tools and features.

How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?

A Shopify agency typically does not take a percentage from sales; instead, Shopify charges a monthly subscription fee and transaction fees if not using Shopify Payments. For a $100 sale, Shopify's transaction fee depends on the plan—Basic Shopify charges 2.0%, Shopify plans charge 1.0%, and Advanced Shopify charges 0.5%—plus credit card processing fees, which vary by provider. The total fees can range from approximately 2.4% to 3.5% of the sale amount, depending on the plan and payment gateway used.

What are some common challenges faced when working at a Shopify agency, and how can new team members effectively overcome them?

At a Shopify agency, team members often face challenges such as rapidly adapting to frequent platform updates, managing multiple client projects with differing needs, and staying current with e-commerce best practices. To overcome these, new hires should proactively participate in ongoing training, leverage internal knowledge-sharing sessions, and make use of Shopify’s official documentation. Regular communication with both clients and colleagues is key to ensuring smooth project delivery and addressing issues promptly, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.

How do I know if I got scammed on Shopify?

A Shopify agency or individual should provide clear communication, transparent pricing, and verifiable references. Be cautious of offers that require upfront payments, lack detailed contracts, or pressure you into quick decisions, as these can be signs of scams in the e-commerce service industry.

Job description

Join PIC, a leading digital marketing agency in Pittsburgh, in an exciting journey of growth and innovation as a Level 1 Full Stack Developer. At PIC, we specialize in creating dynamic digital marketing strategies and building the digital infrastructure that powers them. We're looking to add a dedicated and driven developer to be a part of our expanding team in the next 2-3 months.

Responsibilities for the Level 1 Full Stack Developer Position

  • Build and Maintain Client Sites & Storefronts:
    • Develop and maintain client sites and e-commerce storefronts, primarily on WordPress with secondary work in Shopify or HubSpot CMS.
    • Execute custom integrations under senior direction - you write the code; senior leadership reviews the architecture.
    • Implement tracking, forms, automations, and conversion-focused UX changes that drive measurable client outcomes.
  • Break/Fix and Troubleshooting:
    • Assist in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and routing website break/fix tickets to keep client sites running smoothly.
    • Flag risks and edge cases to senior leadership early - your job is to surface issues, not solve critical ones solo.
  • AI-Native Development Workflows:
    • Use AI coding tools (Claude Code and similar) to plan, build, and QA work efficiently.
    • Contribute to how PIC uses AI to deliver more for clients without compromising quality.
    • Document what you build so account managers and strategists can hand it off cleanly to clients.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Partner directly with strategists and account managers to understand client goals and translate them into technical solutions.
    • Participate in code review and development practices that keep our work ship-ready.
    • Communicate clearly about what you're building, why, and any blockers or risks along the way.

Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of hands-on development experience (can include freelance, agency, or in-house projects).
  • Strong working knowledge of WordPress (PHP, custom themes, plugin basics, and site maintenance).
  • Working experience with either Shopify (Liquid, theme development) or HubSpot CMS (HubL, workflows, custom objects).
  • Comfort with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and at least one server-side language (PHP, Node, or Python).
  • Experience with version control and standard development practices, including Git branching, pull requests, and participating in code review.
  • A disciplined approach to testing and validating your own work before handing it off.
  • Experience reading and consuming REST APIs (HubSpot, Shopify, Stripe, or similar third-party integrations).
  • Strong written communication - you can explain what you built and why in clear, accessible language.
  • Located in or near the Greater Pittsburgh region (Morgantown to Erie, Pittsburgh to State College).

What We're Really Looking For

  • Trajectory over track record. We'd rather invest in a developer climbing toward great than hire one who's already settled into good.
  • Core values fit. PIC runs on a defined set of values - we'll talk about them in the interview, and we'll be looking for evidence you live them.
  • Attitude. Hungry, humble, and coachable. You take feedback well and you give it honestly.
  • Curiosity about AI tooling. You don't need to be an expert - you need to be the kind of person who'd spend a Saturday afternoon figuring out Claude Code on your own.

Hours, Salary & Benefits

  • Competitive salary: $65,000 - $80,000/year, based on experience and demonstrated trajectory.
  • 100% paid healthcare for the employee.
  • Dental, vision, and supplement insurance options available.
  • Flexible work schedule with remote/hybrid options.
  • Company-provided computer and development tools.
  • PTO.
  • Hybrid working environment.
  • Direct mentorship from senior leadership invested in your growth.
  • Opportunities for professional development in a collaborative and innovative work environment.

We partner with small-to-mid-size marketing teams and B2B/DTC brands, offering a wide range of digital marketing and development services to elevate their businesses and achieve impactful results.

We're actively investing in AI-native workflows - Claude Code, Anthropic tooling, and MCP integration - to deliver faster, smarter solutions for our clients. This is a rare opportunity to grow as a developer inside that environment from day one.

Our Core Values

At the heart of PIC are our six core values, which are integral to our operations and our success:

  1. We succeed when our clients thrive
  2. Be a good person. Care about ALL people

Join us at PIC, where our commitment to these values create a dynamic and rewarding work environment, driving both our clients' and our own success.

Why This Role

  • Work directly under senior leadership invested in AI-native workflows - you're not learning alone, and you're not buried under layers of management.
  • Real client projects with visible business impact, not internal tickets or busywork.
  • Exposure to AI-native development workflows on day one - you'll learn how to use Claude Code, Cursor, and similar tools to plan, build, and QA faster.
  • Small team where your work is seen, your growth is supported, and the next level is earnable.
  • A foundation for the next stage of your career - we're building developers, not just filling seats.
