What is a senior web designer?

Senior Web Designers are experienced professionals responsible for creating and overseeing the visual design and layout of websites. They collaborate with clients, developers, and other designers to ensure that websites are both visually appealing and user-friendly. Senior Web Designers often lead design projects, mentor junior team members, and stay current with the latest design trends and technologies. Their work involves using design software, understanding user experience (UX) principles, and translating business goals into effective web solutions.

What skills and qualifications does a senior web designer need?

To thrive as a Senior Web Designer, you need advanced proficiency in visual design, user experience (UX), HTML/CSS, and a solid portfolio demonstrating your work, often supported by a degree in graphic or web design. Expertise with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sketch, and familiarity with content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress is typically required. Creativity, strong collaboration, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the creation of engaging, user-friendly websites that meet client needs and business objectives while working effectively with cross-functional teams.

How does a senior web designer collaborate with developers and other team members during a project?

A Senior Web Designer works closely with developers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure that design concepts are effectively translated into functional websites. This often involves participating in regular meetings, providing design assets, and giving feedback during development sprints. Senior Web Designers also help bridge the gap between creative vision and technical implementation by communicating design intentions clearly and addressing any feasibility concerns. Strong collaboration skills are essential, as they frequently provide guidance to junior designers and ensure alignment across the team.

Job description

Position Overview

Job Requisition ID # 26WD98408 At Autodesk AEC, we help teams meet the world’s rapidly expanding building and infrastructure needs while making design and construction more predictable, safe, and sustainable. The Construction Field Delivery team is transforming how projects are delivered through a connected productivity platform that is intuitive, scalable, AI-driven, and seamlessly accessible across mobile, and web. We are seeking a Senior Principal Designer to help shape the next generation of construction experiences within Autodesk Forma. Reporting to the Director of Experience Design for Construction Field Delivery, you will define and drive a cohesive UX vision across web and native iOS/Android experiences serving both office administrators and jobsite teams. This role requires balancing the competing needs and operational realities of multiple user groups working within highly complex construction workflows. As a senior design leader, you will establish scalable design frameworks and interaction models across a broad product ecosystem while leveraging emerging technologies (i.e. on mobile) to solve deeply complex customer problems. You will partner closely with Product, Engineering, and executive leadership to shape strategy, influence outcomes, and elevate experience quality across everything we deliver. Through strong systems thinking, storytelling, and design craft, you will inspire cross-functional teams and help define how technology improves the delivery of large commercial and civil projects in the real world.

Travel: approximately quarterly across North America and other international locations.

Responsibilities
  • Apply deep product, platform, user-centered design, and AEC industry expertise to influence product strategy, anticipate emerging customer needs, and identify opportunities where new technologies can deliver meaningful customer value
  • Create compelling design vision artifacts, including prototypes, diagrams, concepts, and visual frameworks, to inspire teams and drive alignment
  • Translate complex user needs and business priorities into clear, actionable experience direction and system frameworks
  • Communicate design vision and strategy with clarity and impact through effective storytelling, leading presentations and discussions that build trust, inform decisions, and engage diverse, cross-functional audiences
  • Support innovation and organizational learning by introducing new design practices, exploring emerging frameworks, and helping teams improve the pace, quality, and ambition of design outcomes
  • Partner with designers, researchers, product managers, and engineering leaders across multiple time zones to guide the translation of design vision into feasible, end-to-end experiences aligned with platform and technical constraints
Minimum Qualifications
  • 12+ years of professional experience as a UX design individual contributor and/or design leader
  • Experience designing SaaS products across multiple device types and software platforms
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and storytelling skills, with the ability to influence across UX, Product Management, Engineering, and Analytics
  • Proficiency with industry-standard design tools such as Figma and AI-enabled prototyping tools
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in larger, cross-team environments
  • Online portfolio showcasing relevant experience and impact
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated interest in mentoring and supporting the growth of other designers
  • Experience driving design vision involving innovative technologies (such as agentic experiences, mobile, or smart devices)
