What does a remote web designer do?

As a remote web designer, your job is to help build a website for your client. In this role, you may program the layout, discuss design options, help produce content, and ensure the site has all the requirements needed to appear in search engine results. Remote web designers may work exclusively for one company or take on freelance work to develop content for anyone who needs it. Many web designers specialize in specific types of content. For example, you can work with major platforms like WordPress, while others code completely original sites to meet the needs of the client. This job frequently requires coding in multiple programming languages.

How to become a remote web designer?

The primary qualifications for becoming a web designer are a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and several years of experience in web design. Many remote web designers create their own portfolio websites to show off their skills, and doing this can help you stand out from other applicants. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a remote web designer position requires communication skills, programming skills, and familiarity with a variety of web development tools. Some employers have other requirements—for example, they may ask you to create digital graphics for marketing or use analytics to provide regular reports about site usage.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote web designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Web Designer, you need strong expertise in UI/UX design principles, proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and a relevant degree or portfolio demonstrating your abilities. Familiarity with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and platforms such as WordPress is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and meeting project deadlines. These skills ensure the delivery of visually appealing, user-friendly websites while maintaining productivity and effective teamwork in a remote work environment.

How does a remote web designer typically collaborate with clients and team members across different time zones?

As a Remote Web Designer, you'll often work with clients and colleagues who are located in various regions, making clear communication essential. Most teams rely on project management tools (like Trello or Asana), design platforms (such as Figma or Adobe XD), and regular video meetings to stay aligned. Flexibility in scheduling and proactive updates help ensure everyone is on the same page, regardless of time differences. Establishing clear deadlines and using asynchronous communication methods are key strategies for effective collaboration in remote environments.

The designer contributes to the design lifecycle following established systems while applying responsive, accessibility, and UI/UX best practices. We are looking for a candidate with a strong graphic design foundation, ideally with some exposure to a marketing or agency environment, who is eager to build their skills across a variety of creative assets, with web as a primary focus.

 Responsibilities:

  • Support the design and execution of marketing websites, landing pages, and digital experiences, working closely with the Group Creative Marketing Manager and following their creative direction
  • Manage assigned design requests, balancing speed and quality with support from more senior designers when priorities shift
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand ICP goals and help ensure designs align with content and messaging
  • Apply the existing website design system as directed, helping maintain consistency with established visual brand standards
  • Apply website best practices, accessibility standards, and responsive design principles as outlined by the team
  • Use data and user insights provided by senior team members to support design iteration and optimization
  • Participate in design reviews, sharing early-stage feedback and taking direction from senior designers and stakeholders
  • Support no-code implementation and publishing in WordPress, including asset preparation and QA, in coordination with development and marketing teams

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Working proficiency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Foundational understanding of web, brand, or digital design and core UX/UI principles, developed through coursework, internships, or early hands-on project work
  • Some exposure to designing for responsive, mobile-first marketing websites
  • Portfolio demonstrating the ability to turn information into clean, visually organized designs catered to the individual needs of a project and brand
  • Comfortable applying established design guidelines to complete assigned tasks, escalating questions to a senior designer or manager
  • Interest in collaborating with video or motion designers on web experiences
  • Willingness to learn how to build and maintain design systems and component libraries under guidance
  • Foundational design skills across layout, composition, visual hierarchy, typography, and color theory
  • Eagerness to take ownership of individual project pieces, with regular check-ins from marketing and development partners
  • Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain design choices when asked, be available, responsive, and answer manager quickly to keep projects moving along
  • Commitment to a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous learning
  • Self-motivated with the ability to grow in a fast-paced, evolving environment

Benefits:

  • Flexible Paid Time Off
  • Paid Holidays and Floating Holidays
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, FSA, HSA with employer contribution, Life Insurance and Pet Insurance
  • 401k with Employer Match
  • Take up to 2 Days of Paid Time Off to Volunteer with a 501c Organization
  • Paid Parental Leave
  • Company-subsidized membership to Wellhub and Peloton
  • Fertility and family-building information platform through Carrot
