How to Become a Remote Web Designer

The primary qualifications for becoming a web designer are a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and several years of experience in web design. Many remote web designers create their own portfolio websites to show off their skills, and doing this can help you stand out from other applicants. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a remote web designer position requires communication skills, programming skills, and familiarity with a variety of web development tools. Some employers have other requirements—for example, they may ask you to create digital graphics for marketing or use analytics to provide regular reports about site usage.

Remote Web Designers focus on creating visual layouts and user experiences, utilizing design tools and principles. Remote Front-End Developers primarily write code to implement designs, ensuring functionality and responsiveness. While both roles often collaborate, their core skills and tools differ, making each role distinct in the web development process.

How does a Remote Web Designer typically collaborate with clients and team members across different time zones?

As a Remote Web Designer, you'll often work with clients and colleagues who are located in various regions, making clear communication essential. Most teams rely on project management tools (like Trello or Asana), design platforms (such as Figma or Adobe XD), and regular video meetings to stay aligned. Flexibility in scheduling and proactive updates help ensure everyone is on the same page, regardless of time differences. Establishing clear deadlines and using asynchronous communication methods are key strategies for effective collaboration in remote environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Web Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Web Designer, you need strong expertise in UI/UX design principles, proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and a relevant degree or portfolio demonstrating your abilities. Familiarity with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and platforms such as WordPress is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and meeting project deadlines. These skills ensure the delivery of visually appealing, user-friendly websites while maintaining productivity and effective teamwork in a remote work environment.

What does a remote web designer do?

A remote web designer creates and designs websites while working from a location outside of a traditional office, such as from home or another remote setting. They use tools like graphic design software and website builders to craft visually appealing and user-friendly web pages. Their responsibilities often include collaborating with clients or teams online, ensuring websites are responsive across devices, and updating site content or layout as needed. Communication and time management skills are crucial since all tasks and meetings are conducted virtually.

What Is the Job of a Remote Web Designer?

As a remote web designer, your job is to help build a website for your client. In this role, you may program the layout, discuss design options, help produce content, and ensure the site has all the requirements needed to appear in search engine results. Remote web designers may work exclusively for one company or take on freelance work to develop content for anyone who needs it. Many web designers specialize in specific types of content. For example, you can work with major platforms like WordPress, while others code completely original sites to meet the needs of the client. This job frequently requires coding in multiple programming languages.

Job description

About the Organization

EnGen offers an at-scale, AI-powered approach to English instruction, designed to solve a systemic access issue: Adult English learners now represent 1 in 10 working-age adults in the U.S., yet the workforce system serves the needs of just 4% of these workers.

A Certified B Corporation, EnGen is filling the gap by partnering with employers, adult educators, workforce development organizations, and state governments to connect job seekers and incumbent workers with English skills, career pathways, and employment in high-demand industries. EnGen's workforce-aligned approach addresses employers' recruitment and retention challenges and advances learners' economic mobility.

Position Overview

We're looking for a Full-Stack Software Engineer to help build the technology that empowers adult English learners to achieve their career goals. You'll develop and enhance our AI-powered learning platform using TypeScript/React on the frontend and Python/FastAPI on the backend.

We expect our engineers to be fluent in AI-assisted development - using tools like Cursor and Claude Code to write, review, and ship code faster and at higher quality. You should be comfortable directing AI to generate code, critically evaluating what it produces, and knowing when to write it yourself.
Full-Stack Development
  • Deliver production software across our TypeScript/React frontend and Python/FastAPI backend - whether writing code directly or steering AI tools to generate it
  • Build responsive web applications for diverse learners across desktop and mobile
  • Design and implement scalable APIs to support our learning platform
  • Develop real-time features for interactive lessons, conversation practice, and learner-coach communication
AI/LLM Integration
  • Integrate Large Language Models for content classification, skill assessment, learner feedback, and personalization
  • Build information extraction systems to analyze learner responses
  • Implement AI-powered features for conversation practice and multilingual support
Development Excellence
  • Write clean, well-tested code - and apply the same rigor when reviewing AI-generated output
  • Actively use and refine AI-assisted development workflows to improve your own productivity
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and education specialists
  • Contribute to A/B testing frameworks and learning experience optimization
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional full-stack web development experience
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript, React, Python, and FastAPI
  • Experience integrating with LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar) for classification, extraction, or personalization
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (Cursor, Claude Code, or similar) - and genuine comfort using them as part of your daily workflow
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and API design
  • Strong passion for EnGen's mission to help immigrants and refugees remove English as a barrier to career advancement
  • Self-directed and able to work independently in a remote environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building edtech or language learning platforms
  • Knowledge of NLP and educational AI applications
  • Familiarity with WCAG accessibility standards
  • Experience with Railway, Cloudflare, or similar cloud infrastructure
  • Multilingual capabilities, particularly Spanish
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Flexible PTO and fully remote environment
  • Professional development budget
  • Mission-driven work with measurable real-world impact
$120,000 - $150,000 a year
Ready to use technology to break down language barriers and create economic opportunities? Join us in building the future of workforce English instruction.
We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information. These tools assist our recruitment team but do not replace human judgment. Final hiring decisions are ultimately made by humans.
